Zack Novak, Mitch McGary, Brett Buscher, Chris Palombizio, and many others failed to bring a sectional title to Chesterton. It was Matt Nover's junior season in high school the last time Chesterton won a sectional title. After losing to Valparaiso by 28 points on February 15, it didn't look like tonight had much hope. But the Trojans turned in one of the biggest surprises of the night.
Valparaiso dismantled Chesterton 67-39 just two weeks ago. The Vikings were riding a nine-game winning streak after shutting down Merrillville and Kankakee Valley in the first two rounds of the sectional. That's why the 18-6 Trojans were heavy underdogs against their rival.
Purdue signee Brandon Newman entered the game averaging 28 points per game. He needed 23 points to become Valpo's all-time leading scorer and single-season record holder. Chesterton held him to nine points in the low-scoring affair. He only had one basket then hit seven of eight free throws.
Chesterton held a slim lead most of the way before winning 35-30.
After winning its third sectional in school history, Chesterton will face another uphill battle against 22-3 Penn. The Kingsmen have two 1,000 point scorers in Noah Applegate and Drew Lutz. It should be a good game in the Michigan City Regional.
