In a battle of MIC foes, Carmel outlasted Ben Davis for the 2019 IHSAA 4A state title.

Carmel jumped out to a 15-6 lead on a jumper from Pete Suder. The freshman was fantastic for Carmel as he crashed the offensive glass and looked to take the action right at Ben Davis. Overall, Carmel was all over the offense glass. The Greyhounds grabbed 46% of their own misses. Those extra-shot opportunities were big in the long run.

Like most of the game, the Giants bounced back. Jalen Windham hit a jumper at the end of the quarter to pull Ben Davis with 17-11.

The fight in the post was physical as Ohio State football signee Dawand Jones and Butler signee John Michael Mulloy traded blows. Ben Davis tried to work through Jones, but Carmel made it tough for him to catch the ball. Both post players scored 10 points in the first half.

Carmel took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds quickly stretched that to seven points as Andrew Owens scored on consecutive possessions. Owens saved his best for last as he scored seven of his 10 points in the fourth quarter. He finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Although Carmel’s lead reached nine points in the fourth quarter, Ben Davis was never completely out of it. Jalen Windham scored nine points in the period to keep the Giants within striking distance. Cameron Maul hit a three-pointer with 38 seconds left to cut the Carmel lead to 56-53.

Carmel struggled from the free throw line all night. The Greyhounds shot 17-30 from the line. They did make six of eight late including two big ones from Luke Heady to make it a two-possession game again.

Carmel won its fourth boys basketball state title in school history with the score of 60-55.

Freshman Pete Suder led Carmel with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Butler signee John Michael Mulloy contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Karsten Windlan had 11 points and five rebounds. Andrew Owens finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Luke Heady ended with seven points, five assists, and no turnovers.

Jalen Windham had a game-high 22 points in the loss. He also had two assists. Dawand Jones tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds.
