PRESS RELEASE: Frankie Davidson scored 20 points, set a school record for career points and helped his team to the Class A state championship, and the Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian senior headlines the honorees in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program. (Pictured: Kyle Ross)
Andrean sophomore Kyle Ross, Silver Creek sophomore Trey Kaufman and Carmel freshman Pete Suder join Davidson as recipients for the week of March 18-23 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Davidson and Ross are co-winners for District 1. Suder collected honors for District 2. Kaufman claimed accolades for District 3.
The 6-6 Davidson tallied 20 points plus 12 rebounds, one assist and three steals in keying Blackhawk Christian to a 60-43 victory over Barr-Reeve for the Class A crown and a 28-2 final record. The University of Indianapolis signee sank 8-of-12 field goals, 1-of-3 3-pointers and 3-of-3 free throws en route to his game-high output, a figure that moved him past 2010 graduate Russell Byrd – who had 1,431 points – as the Braves’ all-time scoring leader.
Ross totaled 16 points with seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in pacing Andrean to a 59-54 decision over Linton-Stockton for the Class 2A title. The 6-7 forward went 5-of-8 from the field, 1-of-2 from long distance and 5-of-6 from the line as the Fightin’ 59ers completed their season at 21-8.
The 6-8 Kaufman was a difference-maker as a rebounder and passer in helping Silver Creek edge Culver Academy 52-49 for the Class 3A championship. The versatile forward scored just four points, but he totaled game highs of 12 rebounds and six assists as the Dragons moved to 25-3. Kaufman also notched two blocked shots while converting 1-of-6 field goals and 2-of-4 free throws.
Suder played his role to perfection on a senior-laden Carmel squad, scoring a team-best 14 points as the balanced Greyhounds outlasted Ben Davis 60-55 for the Class 4A trophy. The 6-2 wing added seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block as the Greyhounds claimed their fourth boys’ basketball crown to join previous titles in 1977, 2012 and 2013. He made 7-of-11 shots in helping Carmel complete its 26-1 campaign.
This is the 11th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the seventh season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its eighth season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to "train hard and eat fresh."
