Zionsville senior guard Ben Weidner scored nine of his 12 points in the final 4:02 of the game to lead the Eagles over Carmel in overtime. (Pictured: Anthony Scales)
With 2.3 seconds remaining in the game, it looked like Carmel was going to escape with a season-opening win despite trailing for most of the game. 2021 shooting guard Will Leary had just hit his fourth three-pointer of the game to put Carmel up 35-32. Zionsville had to go the length of the court to tie.
Freshman Logan Imes took the in-bound pass then advanced the ball to Weidner. It didn't seem like there would be enough time with just 2.3 seconds on the clock for a dribble and a pass, but Weidner was able to an off-balanced three that found the bottom of the net. It was perfect execution to send the game into overtime.

Weidner scored the first four points of the extra frame. Zionsville never looked back from there. The Eagles built in an eight point lead before winning by five, 46-41.
To begin the game, it was all Anthony Scales. He scored the first 11 points for Zionsville. He was working well in the lane then buried a spot-up three-pointer. On the other end, Carmel struggled to find an offensive rhythm against Zionsville's zone. Carmel only took seven shots in the opening period and scored just five points.
The game grinded to a halt in the second period. Both teams turned the ball over at a high rate. There were only 12 combined shots in the eight minute quarter. For the half, each team only had the ball 18 times. The offenses couldn't get going.
Out of halftime, Gunnar Vannatta scored four points for Zionsville to push its lead to nine points. That was the largest lead of the game. Carmel only managed six points in the third quarter and trailed by seven going to the fourth.
If Weidner's shot doesn't go in, Carmel's Will Leary would have been the hero. He made three triples in the fourth quarter, and each one was bigger than the previous. Leary hit a three to open the fourth quarter scoring. He then hit a bomb to tie the game with two minutes left. His final three left 2.3 seconds left on the clock.
