Kansas State-bound point guard Nijel Pack connected on a three-pointer on Lawrence Central's first possession. The Bears scored on five of the first six possessions to take a 12-2 lead. It looked like Lawrence North might be in trouble, but the Wildcats answered back and accelerated to an 83-73 road win. (Picutred: DJ Hughes)
After the quick start from LC, DJ Hughes scored inside then Tony Perkins picked the pocket of an LC player and finished the play with a dunk. Those plays enabled LN to get its footing. Pack answered with his third three-pointer to give the Bears a 15-7 lead.
From there, Perkins and Hughes led an 11-0 LN run. Hughes was ripping the rim off with his dunks, and Perkins splashed a couple of threes. It was an impressive answer by the Wildcats.
The second quarter was back and forth before Shamar Avance helped LN open a lead. He knocked down three free throws before finding Hughes for one of his big dunk to extend LN's lead to seven points. Perkins connected on two three-pointers late in the half to stretch the Wildcat lead to 10.
Avance continued to have a major impact in the third quarter. He scored 10 points in the period. He kept LC at arm's length throughout the stanza. He made plays on defense and as a playmaker as well.
LC struggled to find a second scorer to Pack. Dre Davis never found a shooting rhythm. He was able to get to the free throw line, but the Louisville signee was only 3-16 from the field. Greg Jenkins and Jasen Graves hit a couple threes but weren't consistent threats. With LN scoring at a steady clip, LC couldn't keep pace. Lawrence North's lead reached 16 in the third quarter.
To end the third, LC went on an 8-2 run behind D'Ante Davis. He scored a couple late buckets then Pack hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to pull the Bears within 10 points. Perkins and Avance wiped away LC's hope with a 10-1 run to begin the final period.
LC fought until the end, but it was LN's night. The Wildcats won 83-73. Lawrence North is 3-0 with wins over Marion and Jeffersonville as well.
