The Noblesville Holiday Tournament began Friday. Here are the recaps for the Andrean-Northridge, Noblesville-Crown Point, and Columbus North-New Albany games. (Pictured: Blake Barker)
Northridge 50, Andrean 45 in overtime.
The Niners received production from sophomore Gabe Gillespie early and often. The six-foot-four forward showed a soft touch with two early baskets. Gillespie is an important piece of the puzzle for Andrean with Kyle Ross leaving the school.
Northridge has a team full of shooters, but it relied on Indiana Wesleyan commitment Alex Stauffer from start to finish in this one. He was the only player able to score consistently for the Raiders for most of the game.
Andrean led most of way until Northridge started to get it going from the outside. Sam Smith knocked down a couple to give Northridge the lead with six minutes remaining in the game.
Nick Flesher stepped up in the second half for Andrean. He took over the scoring lead from Gillespie at half time. He finished with a team-high 14 points. Ben Jones and Deshon Burnett were steady options for Andrean throughout the game.
The game went to overtime, but Stauffer was too much in the extra frame. He scored six points in overtime to lead the Raiders to the win. He had a game-high 23 points. Smith was also in double figures with 10 points for Northridge.
Noblesville 48, Crown Point 43.
Despite a frentic pace early, points were hard to secure. It took seven possessions for Noblesville to score its first points of the game. Sophomore E.J. Smith scored the first six points for the Millers, and he didn't even start the game.
In the second quarter, Jordan Gadis and Brendon Fisher picked up the scoring for Noblesville. The senior duo was big for the Millers the rest of the way. Behind their second-quarter scoring, Noblesville built a nine-point lead at the half.
Crown Point scored as many points in the third quarter as it did in the first half, but Gadis and Fisher kept pace and more. Finally in the fourth, Crown Point was able to get back into it. Jake Oostman converted a three-point play to open the period. After a couple of Crown Point stops, Dylan Matusak scored to make it a five-point game. The teams traded baskets before Matusak connected on a triple to bright Crown Point within three. It was the closest that Crown Point had been since midway through the second quarter.
With the game slipping away from the Millers, Gadis answered back with a three-pointer of his own. It gave Noblesville breathing room for a few possessions before Ty Smith cut it back to three points with just over a minute to play. After a turnover by Noblesville, Crown Point had a look at a three-pointer to tie the game, but it didn't fall.
Noblesville ended up winning 48-43. Fisher led the Millers with 15 points and eight rebounds. Gadis recorded 13 points and eight rebounds. Alex Hunt added seven, and E.J. Smith finished with six.
Crown Point was led by Jake Oostman's nine points. Ty Smith added eight.
Columbus North 48, New Albany 30.
Much like the previous game, the offenses were not clicking early in this one. It took two and a half minutes for the first points to be scored. It didn't heat up too much from there although Columbus North was efficient on the offensive end.
Senior center Casper Clark gave Columbus North a boost early. The big post player scored four points in the opening quarter to give Columbus North the lead. New Albany was stuck on three points until Tucker Biven made a three-pointer late in the quarter.
After not scoring in the first quarter, Trey Hourigan scored the first six points for New Albany in the second. That made it 15-12, and it looked like NA might have gained its footing.
That wasn't the case as junior wing Jakub Trusina delivered a punch off the bench for North. He did a good job of using his size by slashing and cutting to the basket. Columbus North went on a 12-0 run behind Trusina and Blake Barker.
New Albany never made it a single-digit game in the second half. Columbus North had too much balance behind Barker. Nick Schiavello, Cameron Wsihmeyer, and Cooper Horn all made sure that New Albany didn't get back in the game.
Along with North's depth, turnovers and poor shooting haunted New Albany. In a game that was played at a relatively slow pace, New Albany still committed 14 turnovers. NA went 2-16 from three-point range to boot.
Barker had 13 points and siz rebounds. Casper Clark finished with eight points and six rebounds. Nick Schiavello added seven. Jakub Trusina and Cooper Horn each had six points.
Hourigan was the bright spot for New Albany. He had 15 points on 7-10 shooting.
In the consolation bracket games, Chesterton defeated Andrean and Crown Point beat New Albany.
