A pair of 3A sectional rivals meet up on Friday night, with the host Brebeuf Braves withstanding a fourth quarter charge by Guerin Catholic to win by seven.
It had all the looks of an offensive shootout in the first few minutes, as each team came out firing. Guerin's junior wing Kaleb Edwards was in attack mode from the start, scoring five quick points for the Golden Eagles. But that was matched by the Brebeuf duo of sophomore Billy Smith and junior Austin Ezell. that pair combined for 14 of Brebeuf's 18 points in the opening quarter.
The second quarter was much different than the first, as the referee's whistles dominated the first half of the period. It wasn't until a pair of Evan Altman free throws 3:29 into the quarter that either team managed to put points on the board. The teams would combine for just 12 points in the quarter, and Brebeuf would head into halftime with a seven point advantage.
Guerin would get Bernie McGuinness back in the second half after he sat out the final 13 minutes of the first half with two fouls. He would immediately get to work, burying a three and finishing through contact. It was Jay Higgins, however, who would help extend Brebeuf's lead in the third. The future Iowa Hawkeye football player used his strength to burrow his way to the rim, drawing foul after foul and converting at the free throw line.
Guerin would make a final charge in the fourth on the back of McGuinness. The senior forward had 19 of his game-high 21 in the second half, with 14 of those coming in the fourth quarter. He used his strength to finish through contact multiple times, and a pick and pop three pointer from the corner would cut the Guerin deficit to just two points with under two minutes left.
That was as close as the Golden Eagles would get, however, as Brebeuf would wrap up the game on a 5-0 spurt and seal a win against their Catholic rivals. Sophomore Billy Smith led Brebeuf with 17 points, as Jay Higgins and Austin Ezell joined him in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively. Bernie McGuinness led all scorers with 21 points for Guerin. Teammate Kaleb Edwards was the only other Golden Eagle in double figures with 11.
