A highly anticipated Decatur County matchup was quickly turned into a rout in front of a packed house Saturday night as Greensburg was able to navigate South Decatur's pressure defense on their way to a 108-73 victory.
Both sides came in highly ranked, as Greensburg sat at #5 in the 3A rankings while South Decatur and their undefeated record checked in at #3 in 2A. From the tip, Greensburg looked to relentlessly attack the rim. Lane Sparks, as would be a theme throughout the evening, was particularly aggressive, scoring four quick points as Greensburg jumped out to an early advantage. Sparks would score 10 in the first quarter as the Pirates jumped out to a nine point lead after a period.
A quick 6-0 spurt to being the second quarter for South Decatur grabbed the attention of Stacy Meyer and his Greensburg squad, who then responded with a 17-4 run to blow the game open again. Time after time, the Pirates would beat the Cougar's pressure by simply driving the ball straight at the rim, where they were met with little to no resistance. The result was a 17 point halftime lead for the home side.
The hosts made sure there was no comeback attempt at the start of the third, as an Andrew Welage dunk off the third quarter inbound kick started a 6-0 run. After that, it was Lane Sparks' turn to get to the rim seemingly whenever he wanted as the Pirates extended their lead to over 20 points at the end of the third quarter.
The only question heading into the fourth quarter was if Greensburg could crack the 100 point mark, and they were well on their way, hitting the 80 point mark with six minutes left and reaching 90 points just under the midway point of the quarter. After dunks by Andrew Welage and Lane Sparks after South Decatur turnovers, Colin Comer finally put the Pirates over the century mark. Comer wasn't done, however, as his dunk in the lane over a South Decatur defender with under a minute left punctuated the victory.
South Decatur suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to 14-1, while Greensburg ran their record to 13-2 on the season.
