On Friday night, Columbus North (12-3) came to Indianapolis to play a young Southport team for a Conference Indiana contest.
During the first possession, Reese Harmon found Casper Clark for an easy bucket around the basket. That foreshadowed the rest of the game. Clark was dominant in the paint as he scored 10 points in the opening quarter.
The game was played at a fast pace with both teams scoring at a high rate. Freshman AJ Dancler started the Southport scoring with a three-pointer. He scored eight points in the first period to keep Southport in the game.
Columbus North's ability to get clean looks and knock them down was the story of the game. The Bulldogs drilled four three-pointers in the first quarter and six in the first half. North wasn't missing from far or close range. After scoring six points in the first quarter, Blake Barker hit two quick baskets to open the second. Barker is having a great junior season and showed Southport why. His quick trigger from the outside and quick first step put a lot of stress on the Souuthport defense.
Barker's second shot stretched Columbus North's lead to nine points. Southport's Brevin Jefferson answered with a triple of his own. Jefferson provides the senior leadership to a team that plays a host of freshmen. In that role, Jefferson has taken his game to the next level as a scorer and shooter. His consistency is much better as a senior.
Columbus North's shot making was too much. Clark, Barker, and Nick Schiavello were locked in and never slowed down. Those three scored 39 combined points in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 45-30 lead at the half.
In the second half, North slowed down a bit but not too much. Clark didn't miss for the entire game. He was tremendous on the glass, as a finisher, and with his footwork. He scored 19 points on nine shots.
Despite a boost from Anthony Ball, Southport was never able to cut into North's lead. Ball didn't play in the first half but attacked the glass and paint hard in the second. The freshman posted seven points and five rebounds in 13 minutes.
Columbus North rolled to the 78-59 victory. For the game, Columbus North scored 1.3 points per possession.
