The Hoosier Crossroads Conference saw several teams sitting one game back in the loss column to Brownsburg. Two of those teams played a tight contest Saturday night, with Franklin Central hanging on to win over Fishers. (Pictured: Javon Small)
It was the visitors who jumped out to an early lead, as the Tigers started on a 13-4 run from the opening tip. Sophomore forward Jeff Simmons had eight in that run, including a three pointer from the corner. Franklin Central would settle in and trail by six at the end of the quarter.
The Flashes would take the lead finally, going on a 20-8 run spanning the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter. The teams would go back and forth the rest of the half, but Javon Small would put a punctuation mark on the first 16 minutes when he hit a stepback triple just before the halftime horn to give Franklin Central a four point lead.
It was a freshman who would grab the attention in the third, as Franklin Central's Jalen Hooks would have nine points and a pair of blocks in the quarter. He had a two handed slam off a pass in the middle of the lane, then with just over a minute left in the quarter, brought the crowd to their feet with a huge two handed alley oop from Sam Mettert in transition.
Hooks also made life difficult for Fishers leading scorer Jeff Simmons. Using his athleticism advantage, Hooks was able to block or significantly alter many of Simmons' attempts around the rim. After his eight points in the first three minutes of the game, Simmons would muster just four points over the last 29 minutes and shoot an uncharacteristic 4-9 from two point range.
Franklin Central would have a four point lead heading into the final eight minutes, but Fishers would mount a charge behind senior guard Alex Szilagyi, who had eight of his game-high 22 points in the fourth. The 6' Szilagyi would cut a six point Flashes lead in half midway through the fourth with a three point play, then eventually tie the game up on a drive and reverse layup with 16.8 seconds left.
On the ensuing possession, Javon Small would drive from the left wing and get fouled going for a layup. His first free throw missed long, but his second try was pure, giving Franklin Central the lead with 6.8 seconds left. Fishers would advance the ball into the frontcourt and call a timeout with 3.8 left. But on the inbound pass, Charlie Smith and Alex Szilagyi could not connect, and Javon Small grabbed the loose ball, ending any shot for Fishers to win.
The win keeps Franklin Central one game behind Brownsburg in the loss column in the HCC, while Fishers falls to 2-3 in conference.
