Saturday's Basketball Day in Indiana saw 4A No. 5 Crispus Attucks take on 2A No. 1 Blackhawk Christian in Kokomo. The game was played with great pace and shot-making before Attucks pulled away late. (Pictured: Sincere McMahon)
To start, it didn't great for Attucks. 2021 frontliner Caleb Furst dunked the opening basket for Blackhawk three seconds into the game. After an Attucks turnover, Furst scored again to give the Braves a 4-0 lead. Sincere McMahon was able to get Attucks on track a couple possessions later as he scored to put the Tigers up 5-4. It was back and forth the entire game.
Attucks ended the first quarter on a 10-2 run thanks to five quick points from Tyran Rodgers off the bench. He gave the Tigers an instant boost with an and-1 during the first possession he was in.
Zane Burke was productive from the start but took his game to a new gear in the second period. He connected on back to back three-pointers to push Blackhawk Christian ahead 21-19. He scored 13 points in the first half.
For Attucks, it was a balanced effort in the first half. Donavon Barnett scored five in the second period to keep the Tigers in the game. With the game tied, freshman Qu'Shawn Ware buried a three with 2:53 left in the half.
Both teams shot extremely well in the opening half. They were a combined 10-24 from three-point distance in the first half. Furst hit a three to close the half giving Blackhawk the 32-29.
In the middle of the third quarter, Burke slashed to the lane for three buckets. The elite shooter seemingly surprised Attucks with his ability to get to the basket. During that stretch, Blackhawk grabbed its largest lead of the game at seven points.
McMahon closed the third quarter well for Attucks. In the final 2:20, the Western Illinois signee scored five points and dished out two assists including a three before the buzzer. That triple cut Blackhawk's lead to 50-47.
The final period was owned by Attucks. McMahon's late three started a 10-0 run for the Tigers. Chris Chinn was all over the floor down the stretch. He scored six points on top of a few steals, assists, and rebounds.
Blackhawk had decent looks in the fourth but couldn't get the shots to go down. Attucks, on the other hand, was hitting shots at a high rate. The five turnovers by the Braves in the fourth didn't help, but Attucks played at an incredible level.
Attucks finished the game on a 12-0 run including five in the final 20 seconds to win 71-57.
Sincere McMahon finished with 21 points (9-21 FG), seven rebounds, and six assists. Donavon Barnett had 11 points and five rebounds. Christ Chinn and Malik Tansmore each had nine points. Jason Hall and Tyran Rodgers finished with seven points each. Qu'Shawn Ware added five.
Zane Burke had a game-high 24 points with six rebounds and three assists. Caleb Furst had 23 points (8-14 FG) and 11 rebounds. Marcus Davidson had an off night and ended with five points. Freshman Gage Sefton gave the Braves good minutes with two points, two rebounds, and two assists.
