Crispus Attucks overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to rally and defeat Cathedral in the first game at Lawrence Central Wednesday night.
The start of the game was a foreshadowing of how the game would end, as Attucks junior Donavon Barnett got a pair of early steals and transition baskets as the Tigers jump to a quick 8-2 lead. Cathedral would settle in from there, leading by four after a period before a string of hot shooting from deep would propel the Irish to a double figure halftime margin.
Cathedral was 6-9 from behind the arc in the first half, with junior guard Jalen Johnson hitting a trio of shots from long range.
Attucks would quickly erase the deficit, starting on a 13-0 run to cut the Cathedral lead down to a single point early in the third. But again, the Irish would regain their composure and take a four point lead going into the fourth quarter.
Sincere McMahon would hit a pair of threes - after starting the game 0-8 from distance - to give Attucks a lead with just over five minutes left. The teams would trade the lead multiple times over the last few minutes, setting up the frantic finish.
After a Cathedral timeout with 47 seconds left and the ball up one, Donavon Barnett would collect a loose ball steming from a Cathedral turnover and race in for a layup to give Attucks a lead. Barnett wasn't done however. As the Irish set up for a shot to win, Barnett again gathered a turnover by Tayshawn Comer to score and give Attucks a three point lead with just over three seconds left.
Vincent Brady was able to get a shot off from the right wing at the buzzer, but it fell well short.
Sincere McMahon scored a game high 28 on 11-21 shooting to lead Attucks, while Barnett and Malik Tansmore joined him in double figures with 10 and 12, respectively. Both teams struggled with turnovers, Cathedral with 18 and Attucks with 16, but Attucks was able to convert many of those turnovers into transition points.
Jalen Johnson led the Irish with 16 points and four made three pointers. Tayshawn Comer added 15 and freshman forward Jake Davis scored 12.
This game was a rematch of the Indianapolis City Tournament final, which was won by Attucks 94-91 in double overtime. Attucks moves on the face Lawrence North in one semifinal Friday, while Cathedral finishes the year with a record of 18-6.
