Indiana Basketball Source looks at the notable coaching changes that have taken place at the high school level this year.
Jeffersonville had a rocky season after Joe Luce resigned prior to the 2019-2020 season. Chris Moore was named the interim coach for the season. This spring, Jeffersonville selected former Providence head coach Andrew Grantz. After Providence, Grantz coached at Fort Myers High School in Florida then served as an assistant at Missouri Baptist last year.
After the season, long-time Warsaw coach Doug Ogle retired. The Tigers filled the position with Matt Moore. He goes to Warsaw after three years at Fishers High School. Prior to that, Moore coached three seasons at Kokomo. He did a great job of developing both of those programs after a losing first season at Kokomo and .500 year at Fishers.
With Moore’s departure, Fishers turned to Garrett Winegar. He went 18-6 in his only season as Warren Central’s head coach. Winegar looks poised for a lengthy coaching career with the way he handled the Warren Central program.
After 17 years, Rob Yoder stepped down at Westview. He won nine sectional titles with the Warriors including one state final appearance and three other semi-state appearances. Filling the void will be former Angola coach Ed Bentley. He had a great run at Angola with three sectional titles.
After three years at Anderson, Mike Elliott has been replaced by Donnie Bowling. Elliott was just 20-53 at Anderson. Bowling comes to Anderson after coaching at Indianapolis Manual and Shortridge. He did a good job of building both of those programs.
The highest profile jobs remaining open are East Chicago Central and Pendleton Heights. It was surprising that ECC did not renew Marcus Jefferson after his third season. At PH, Kevin Bates stepped down from the head coaching position after five seasons. Bates had a losing record in the last three.
