On the early season senior night, Pike handled Hamilton Southeastern behind big games from Ryan Conwell, JJ Louden, and Devon Woods.
Hamilton Southeastern jumped to a 4-0 lead before Conwell connected on his first three. He hit three triples in the opening quarter on his way to 13 points in the period. The lefty knocked down shots from all over the court.
Turnovers were a problem for Hamilton Southeastern all game, but the errors led to Pike opening a 15-point lead in the second quarter. The turnovers resulted in Eddie Jones getting his rhythm. The senior wing started to score in transition and gain confidence. Conwell, JJ Louden, and Devon Woods created most of the HSE turnovers with their pressure and activity.
After making an impact on the defensive end and as a distributor in the first half, Woods started to look for his shot more in the second half. The sophomore point guard knocked down a couple of shots early in the half to extend Pike’s lead. Woods scored 11 of his 14 points after halftime.
The third quarter was big for Louden as well. He scored 10 of his 18 points in the period. He made a couple of outside shots and attacked the basket on a regular basis. Louden was also able to get a few transition opportunities.
Pike’s lead swelled to 28 points before HSE was able to get its feet on the offensive end. Dalton Retzner, Sam Jacobs, and Alex Totten kickstarted the offense. Retzner was productive around the paint all game, and he started to get more offensive looks late. Jacobs was slashing to the basket throughout the game but found success late. Totten converted a couple of outside shots as well.
The biggest part of HSE’s late surge was flipping from turning the ball over to creating the turnovers. Freshman Deion Miles played the last two quarters and gave the Royals steady ball-handling. The rookie point guard was poised, saw the floor, and scored at the basket. He helped change the game for HSE.
Pike ran out the clock to win 84-73. Conwell and Louden each had 18 points to lead all scorers.
