(Purdue signee Caleb Furst opened his senior season in style)

2A #1 Blackhawk Christian opened their season Tuesday night with a dominating effort, defeating North Side 98-48 thanks to a near-flawless night from Zane Burke and a big double-double from Caleb Furst.

The start of the game was a preview of what was to come for North Side as Burke and Furst got the host Braves off to a quick start, scoring eight of their first ten points. The damage from North Side was self-inflicted, as several Braves buckets came as points off of Legend turnovers. But sophomore guard Brashawn Bassett was able to keep North Side within range as he scored nine of their 21 first-quarter points.

Freshman Brauntae Johnson, who had 26 points in their season opener last week, showed why he's one of the most talked-about freshmen in the state, as he scored eight points within the first 1:45 of the second quarter to pull North Side to within four. Those eight points would be his only points in the quarter, however, as Blackhawk continued to punish North Side mistakes by converting easy baskets on the offensive end. The half ended on a 16-4 run for the Braves, whose advantage heading into the locker room was 18 points.

Johnson again got off to a hot start to a quarter in the third, as he scored nine points in the first three minutes to reach 20 for the game, but Zane Burke was able to match Johnson basket for basket. Burke, who shot 13-14 from two-point range, was simply phenomenal in the midrange, as he scored on pull up jumpers and leaners off the dribble no matter what defense was thrown at him.

Blackhawk led by 32 after three periods, and that advantage would swell quickly in the fourth, as the Braves did not let their foot off the gas until just a few minutes were remaining. The Braves put four in double figures, led by Burke's 28 and Furst's 24. Marcus Davidson added 15 and Jake Boyer chipped in with 11. North Side was paced by the freshman Johnson with 24 points, while Brashawn Bassett came off the bench to score 13. No other Legend tallied more than 5 points, however.
