A valiant comeback attempt fell short Tuesday night as Snider ran out of time against New Haven, falling to the Bulldogs 78-72. The Panthers were down 24 points early in the fourth quarter before methodically dwindling their deficit.
New Haven led from wire to wire, quickly establishing their dominance inside against the much smaller Snider squad. Senior forward Thomas Latham was a man on a mission from the onset, scoring 10 points in the opening period as Snider had no one to match up with him inside. That story continued in the second period, as the New Haven size advantage led to nine offensive rebounds in the first half and contested everything Snider attempted from the field, limiting them to just 10/33 shooting in the first half.
The second half started much like the first half went, as Thomas Latham remained dominant both scoring and rebounding, as the
St. Francis commitment was simply too much for the Panthers to handle. The 6'5 Latham showcased his range as well, making his only three-point attempt of the evening as well as hitting a pair of 18 footers.
New Haven would lead 58-40 at the end of three periods and scored to first six points of the fourth quarter to stretch their margin to 24 points, but Snider would begin their comeback. Extending their defensive pressure full court, Snider was able to force several turnovers against the Bulldogs, who lack a true point guard. The deficit was still 17 points with just over four minutes to go, but New Haven was showing signs of cracking, as multiple turnovers and missed free throws mounted, as the Bulldogs were 5/15 from the free-throw line at one point before finishing the game 13/28 from the charity stripe.
Karson Jenkins had a pair of free throws fail to drop that could have gotten Snider to within ten, but a Jade Moore three did the trick with 2:23 to go. Moore scored 12 of his team-high 24 points in the fourth quarter. New Haven would make some free throws down the stretch to keep Snider at arm's length, and the six-point final margin was as close as the Panthers would get in the fourth quarter.
Thomas Latham finished with a monster 34 point, 13 rebound performance on 14/18 shooting from the field. Jakar Williams was the only other Bulldog in double figures, narrowly missing a double-double of his own with 13 points and nine boards. Karson Jenkins had 18 and Aidan Lambert 17 to go along with Moore's 24 points for Snider.
