Brebeuf faced Pike in a quarterfinal of the Marion County Tournament after the Braves beat Franklin Central. The Red Devils advanced without a game as Speedway quarantined.

Billy Smith knocked down a three, and Evan Altman scored four early points to give Brebeuf a quick 10-7 lead. Pike turned things around with an 11-0 sprint to end the quarter. A Devon Woods’ three-pointer at the buzzer capped the run.

In the second quarter, Pike’s defense made the difference. The Red Devils held Brebeuf to five points in the second quarter. The only Braves field goal came from Smith with 2:38 left in the half. Pike’s defense sparked much of its offense. JJ Louden was creating steals left and right. The 2022 guard also dished out three assists in the half. Pike was great in transition with Louden and Ferguson leading the way to a 37-15 halftime lead.

Pike had ten assists in the first half.

To open the second half, Brebeuf went to a man-to-man and extended its pressure full court. It worked as the Braves got back into the game. Offensively, Smith took over. He mixed slashing to the basket and outside shots. He scored 10 points in the third quarter. Altman had a couple of scores inside. Pike’s lead was cut to 49-37.

Early in the fourth, Brebeuf cut Pike’s lead to 11 points, but Conwell scored eight of the next nine points to push the Red Devils’ lead back to 20 points. Altman kept attacking and scoring but could not keep pace with Pike.

The Red Devils won going away, 71-51. Pike will play Lawrence North in the Marion County Tournament semifinal at Southport on Friday night.

Conwell led Pike with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists. JJ Louden filled the stat sheet with 13 points and four steals; Edward Jones added 11 points and four rebounds; Omari Ferguson came off the bench for eight points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals; Devon Woods tallied seven points, and DeJuan Pearson recorded five points and seven rebounds.

For Brebeuf, Altman scored 19 in the loss. Billy Smith added 15. Zach Reed scored eight, and Austin Ezell finished with seven points and five rebounds.
