2A No. 2 Covenant Christian welcomed 3A Guerin Catholic (7-1) to the west side of
Indianapolis. After a long layoff, this was Guerin’s first game of 2021.
Kaleb Edwards delivered most of the Guerin scoring punch in a high-scoring start. The senior guard was a force in transition and attacking the basket. He scored 11 points on five of six shooting. Will Grissom scored the other seven first-quarter points for Guerin.
For Covenant Christian, the quickness of Bryan Lomax caused Guerin problems. He started with a corner three-pointer then scored going to the basket. Lomax kept Covenant within striking distance, 18-17, after one quarter.
Covenant Christian’s leading scorer (21.9 PPG) Trey Flatt was held to three points in the first period. He found his rhythm in the second. His eight-point second quarter gave Covenant the lead. For the half, he was 3-7 from deep.
Late in the first half, Edwards answered Flatt’s scoring burst with a bucket. Then Spencer Wilt ended the first-half scoring with a score to give Guerin the 28-27 lead.
Senior guard Joe Bobilya did not score for Guerin in the first half and only took a few shots. He entered the game averaging 18.6 points. Covenant Christian held Bobilya in check.
To end the third period, Flatt, Loxmax, and Graham Shelton knocked down triples for Covenant Christian to give the Warriors the lead. CC ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 44-35.
Early in the fourth, Brock Buckley extended Covenant Christian’s lead to ten with a free throw. Buckley was a factor with nine points and five rebounds. He was active throughout the game.
Once again, Edwards was there to pull Guerin back into the game. He scored twice to make it a two-possession game. He finished with 27 points.
Buckley and Shelton put the game out of reach. Buckley leaked out bucket then Shelton drilled a three-pointer and scored in the lane. Guerin kept fighting but could not get over the hump.
Covenant Christian won 61-55 as Flatt and Lomax each scored 17 points in the victory; Flatt had six rebounds and five assists, also. Shelton recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.
In the loss, Edwards had 27 and five rebounds. Will Grissom tallied 16 points and four rebounds; Joe Bobilya had four points, five rebounds, and three assists.
