(Brendan Lytle helped Dwenger defeat New Haven)
Bishop Dwenger rallied from a seven-point deficit entering the fourth quarter to escape with a 49-43 win over New Haven in a non-conference matchup Saturday night. The win was Bishop Dwenger's third of the week following victories over Leo and Northrop.
CJ Pieper scored the first six points for Dwenger as they raced out to an early lead, but New Haven relied on their physicality and balance to fight back and knot the score at 11 at the end of the first quarter. Turnovers were the story of the second period, as both teams struggled to operate in traffic. Bishop Dwenger would manage a run to open an advantage heading into the locker room for halftime.
Exiting the locker room, it was clear that New Haven had a fire lit under them, as the Bulldogs jumped all over Dwenger once the third period began. On the more athletic side, New Haven repeatedly turned away Dwenger shot attempts inside and wrestled away rebounds, and generally out-muscled the Saints to the tune of an 11-0 run to start the half. Jackson Turnwald would hit a pair of three-pointers in the period for New Haven, and Jakar Williams would control the action from his point forward position by notching 3 assists in the period.
Brenden Lytle and
Xavier Allen would each hit three-pointers in the period for Dwenger, as they saw a five-point halftime advantage turn into a seven-point deficit entering the final eight minutes of play.
The Saints would fight back, as they got outstanding play off the bench from 6'5 junior Joe Kelly, who battled for rebounds against the larger New Haven frontline. A Brenden Lytle three-pointer, his third of the game, brought the Saints to within a point with just under three minutes to play. On the next Dwenger possession, senior guard
Xavier Allen would hit his third triple of the evening, then after a New Haven turnover on the other end, Lytle would find Joe Kelly running the floor for a layup that would give the Saints a four-point advantage.
Kelly would be fouled following a missed New Haven three-pointer, and his two free throws proved to be the final margin as the Saints outscored the Bulldogs 19-6 in the fourth period for the come-from-behind victory.
Bishop Dwenger moves to 10-9 on the year, while New Haven sees their record fall to 13-6.
