Westfield did not make its first three-pointer until the 4:24 mark of the first quarter. From there, Zionsville was caught in an avalanche as the Shamrocks buried 13 three-pointers on their way to a 61-47 win.
That first Westfield three was by Cam Haffner. About a minute and a half later, he followed it up with another one. In the game, the junior guard knocked down six three-pointers. Those first two triples helped Westfield go on a 13-2 run to end the first quarter.
Unfortunately for Zionsville, Westfield's shooting did not slow down in the second quarter. The Rocks made four of seven threes in the stanza as Braden Smith, Nic DePasquale, and Benji Welch converted long-range shots. Smith controlled the half. The junior point guard played with great confidence on his way to 13 points and three assists by halftime. Westfield held a 34-19 lead at the break.
Out of the lockerroom, Zionsville landed a quick punch. On the first possession of the half, sophomore Logan Imes found Johnathan MacAbee for a three-pointer. Then Imes created a steal and took it the other way for a layup. Seconds later, Imes scored again. In only 80 seconds, Zionsville cut Westfield's lead down to eight points.
Following a timeout, Haffner made another three to get Westfield back on its feet. He made three triples in the period to regain the Shamrocks' breathing room. Zionsville leaned on sophomores Imes and Nick Richart all year, and the duo combined for 11 points in the third, but it was not enough. Westfield's shooting pushed the lead back to 15 points by the end of the frame.
Early in the fourth, Smith put the dagger into Zionsville. In the first three minutes of the period, he scored eight of Westfield's 11 points. He assisted on the other triple. With that spurt, Westfield's lead swelled to 26 points. Soon after, Smith and Haffner took a seat and the reserves took over.
With the starters on the Westfield bench, Zionsville went on a late run. Brendan Wood knocked down two three-pointers and MacAbee and Dylan Ritter also hit triples for the Eagles. It was a 12-point game with 30 seconds left. Too little, too late, but it made the final minutes more interesting than expected.
Westfield won 61-47.
Smith recorded 23 points and eight assists to lead Westfield. Haffner added 18 points and seven rebounds, while DePasquale tallied ten points and three assists. Welch contributed four points and three assists.
Imes led Zionsville with 14 points and six rebounds. MacAbee added 11 points. Richart had six points and four rebounds, and Owen Prickett recorded four points and five assists.
