Indiana Basketball Source breaks down the morning 2A regional match-ups.
North Judson
Boone Grove vs. Bowman Academy
Koron Davis powered Bowman Academy through a tough sectional. His 33-point game helped the Eagles upset Andrean. The senior wing averaged 26 points per game this season, so it is no surprise that he rose to the occasion. Then, Bowman beat Illiana Christian and Marquette Catholic. Judah Tolbert and Jevon France provide support to Davis.
Boone Grove won its first sectional since 2013, and the Wolves have never won a regional. Junior guard Trey Steinhilber is trying to change that. He averaged 17 points per game this year and will need to match that and more against Bowman. Mason Bills, Zach Lomalie, Kyle Casbon, and Drew Murray score between seven and nine for BG.
Boone Grove has not fared well against the top teams on their schedule this year. Something will need to change to have a chance against Bowman.
Churubusco vs. Blackhawk Christian
This is a high-powered match-up, but Blackhawk Christian usually dispatches opponents like this with ease. Churubusco advanced through a competitive sectional which featured Central Noble and Westview. The duo of Landen Jordan and Jackson Paul lead the way for the Eagles. Each scores more than 20 points per game. Paul adds 6.2 assists per game, while Jordan grabs 13.8 rebounds. Jordan has the size and athleticism to battle Caleb Furst a bit. Churubusco will need a big game from Luke McClure to pull the upset as well.
Blackhawk Christian is a top-five team regardless of class in the state. Purdue signee and Mr. Basketball candidate Caleb Furst leads the way. Furst averaged an efficient 21.4 points and 14.1 rebounds per game. He could have averaged significantly more but shared the ball whenever he was surrounded. Zane Burke had a great season. The University of St. Francis-bound guard recorded 18.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game. Marcus Davison is an excellent shooter that scores 13 a game. Callan Wood, Jake Boyer, and Gage Sefton provide shooting and timely scoring.
Churubusco is a talented team, but it does not seem like they will have much of a chance against Blackhawk Christian.
Lapel
Blackford vs. Wapahani
Blackford is led by scoring machine Luke Brown. The Stetson signee is nearing 3,000 career points. With two big scoring games Saturday, he could get there. This sets up a match-up of Blackford’s seniors (Brown, Landon Grimes Cam Elam) against Wapahani’s youth. The Raiders are led by freshman Isaac Andrews and sophomore Aidan Franks. Both youngsters are averaging more than 16 points per game. Senior Caleb Henderson averages 9.4 points and 7.2 rebounds for Wapahani.
Brown is coming off a 50-point game against Taylor. Are Wapahani’s young guards ready for Brown? That will decide the game.
Rossville vs. Rochester
Rossville was a bit of a surprise coming out of Fountain Central. Carroll looked like the favorite there, but Rossville beat them in the final. Rossville has four double-figure scorers led by Damon Shaw. He averages 15.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Luke Meek, Jesse Cornell, and Reid Douglas all score about ten points per game.
Rochester has a similar scoring balance with Grant McCarter and Kyle Reinartz leads the way with 12 points per game. Quin Stesiak, Tarick McGlothin, and Blake Hughes are consistent contributors as well. As a group, Rochester is a great three-point shooting team. McCarter knocked down 48 threes this year at a 40 percent rate.
If Rochester shoots as it has for most of the year, a slight edge would go to the Zebras, but this should go down to the wire.
Greenfield
Parke Heritage vs. Triton Central
Triton Central made a surprise run out of a sectional with South Ripley and South Decatur. Now, Triton Central looks to keep the season going. David Steele and Aiden Lindsey are the two leading scorers for Triton Central. Steele is a fantastic outside shooter – 40 percent on seven three-point attempts per game.
Sophomore Christian Johnson (16.7 PPG, 7.1 RPG) leads the way for Parke Heritage, but Connor Davis and Riley Ferguson are key pieces as well. Parke Heritage is not a great outside shooting team but does a great job of getting to the basket and free throw line.
Can TC keep Parke Heritage away from the basket and off the free-throw line? That will be a key to the game.
Shenandoah vs. Covenant Christian
This is a state championship-level 2A game. To end the season, Indiana Basketball Source ranked Shenandoah second and Covenant Christian third in the class. Shenandoah has built its program for this postseason. The 2021 class – Andrew Bennet, Jakeb Kinsey, Kam Graddy, Michael Howard, and Kaden McCollough – all average more than ten points per game. The Raiders move the ball, shoot well from distance, and can score in the lane.
Covenant Christian is led by senior guard Trey Flatt (17 PPG), but the Warriors have many offensive options as well. Brock Buckley, BJ Lomax, and Graham Shelton all can take over a game. The athleticism of that crew compares well to the top half of 4A teams. Covenant Christian beat teams like Bloomington North, Andrean, and Guerin Catholic this season. They will be ready to compete with Shenandoah.
This one is too hard to handicap. Just sit back and enjoy the game between two of the top 2A teams.
Southridge
Paoli vs. Southridge
Colson Montgomery put Southridge on his back to win the sectional. He scored 38 points, including 26 in the first half, to beat South Spencer. Montgomery’s best sport is baseball, but he is showing that he can push Southridge deep into the state basketball tournament as well.
Brett Bosley is a four-year starter for Paoli. He has the size and athleticism to slow down Montgomery as well. It will be interesting to see how much the two are matched against each other, and who is more productive in the individual battle.
Southwestern (Hanover) vs. Linton-Stockton
Linton relies heavily on the guard tandem of Lincoln Hale and Joey Hart. Hale is the senior leader that is signed with Indiana State. He takes over games regularly. He is excellent off the dribble and has deep shooting range. Hart is one of the best shooters in the state. He must be guarded to 25 feet. Hale and Hart are two of the top 2A players in the state.
Southwestern has a bit more balance with Austin Kramer, Matthew Williams, and Foster Mefford. Kramer had a bunch of 20+ point outbursts this season. Williams and Mefford have been mainstays in the Southwestern lineup throughout their careers as well. Mefford is the playmaker of the bunch.
Will the balance of Southwestern win or the individual efforts of Hale or Hart? That is the storyline that Indiana Basketball Source is watching.
