The 3A title game between NorthWood and Guerin Catholic was all NorthWood from the tip, thanks to Cade Brenner. The senior guard scored the first eight points of the game. He tallied twelve points by going two of three from deep in the opening quarter.

The size of NorthWood bothered Guerin, and the Golden Eagles only managed seven first-period points.

NorthWood opened a fourteen-point lead before Guerin started chipping away. It was a balanced effort from the Golden Eagles, with Kamea Chandler, Robert Sorensen, and Jack Cherry carrying the biggest chunk. Chandler provided most of the early scoring for Guerin.

Brenner reappeared for NorthWood when Guerin started to build confidence. The senior exploded for twenty-three first-half points. Brenner nailed five of seven threes in the opening half and eight of eleven overall.

Thanks to Brenner, NorthWood held a 35-27 halftime lead.

Ian Raasch had a good third quarter. His athleticism and versatility were showcased as he handled the ball, rebounded, and finished above the rim.

Still, Guerin stayed within striking distance. Early in the fourth, Lucas Parker scored a driving layup over a couple of NorthWood defenders to pull the Golden Eagles within 44-37.

Soon after the Parker score, Chandler and Cherry buried three-pointers. NorthWood clung to a 48-43 lead at that point.

As Guerin closed in on NorthWood, Aaron Wolfe drew up a wonderful play to get Tyler Raasch a mid-paint jumper, and the sophomore converted. The celebration was cut short as Chandler and Ty Sanders kept scoring for Guerin.

Chandler drove the lane and finished through a Tyler Raasch foul. His free throw with 1:39 tied the game.

NorthWood milked more than a minute off the clock with the game knotted at 52 before Ian Raasch drove. He could not finish the play but grabbed the rebound to maintain possession. The final play went to Brenner, who went scoreless in the second half, but he could not get the shot to drop.

Guerin took the lead to begin overtime with a free throw by Dylan Murans, but Ian Raasch answered within seconds. After a defensive stop, Brenner drove before spotting Ethan Wolfe open for a three on the other side of the court. Wolfe buried the triple to push NorthWood’s lead to 57-53.

Like all game, Guerin did not go quietly. The Golden Eagles had the ball down two with fifteen seconds left. However, a Chandler drive ended with a turnover, and NorthWood won 66-63 in overtime.

Brenner led all scorers with 28 points. Tyler Raasch posted a complete line of 14 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks. Ian Raasch recorded 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Wolfe contributed nine points and five rebounds. Brock Bontrager added two points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Chandler led Guerin with 22 points and four assists. Cherry scored 15 points, and Robert Sorensen scored eight points and four rebounds.

The 2A title game between Blackhawk Christian and Linton-Stockton drew a bunch of college coaches and plenty of fan attention. The two schools dominated the 2A polls all season.

Joey Hart, a Central Florida signee, and Logan Webb pushed Linton-Stockton to an early lead, but both went two of six in the opening quarter. Blackhawk committed four early turnovers, but sophomore Kellen Pickett and Isaac Smith hit threes to keep the Braves in it.

Hart kept attacking in the second quarter. He took a handoff from Braden Walters to get downhill and finished through a Gage Sefton foul to put Linton up 23-13. It was Sefton’s second foul of the half too.

The senior guard caught fire from three in the first half. He made four of five three-pointers to give Linton a 29-18 halftime lead. Hart scored eighteen points by himself.

Matt Roth switched the defensive matchup on Hart by putting Pickett on him. The size of Pickett helped slow the shooting of Hart. After eighteen first-half points, Hart only scored five points on 1-14 shooting in the second half.

The Braves erased the eleven-point halftime deficit behind the improved defense and Sefton and Pickett powering the offense. Sefton scored ten of his sixteen points in the second half, while Pickett tallied twelve of his nineteen after the break.

Blackhawk outscored Linton 15-6 in the third quarter.

In the fourth, Blackhawk continued to make Linton take challenged shots before converting on the other end. Blackhawk shot an effective field goal percentage of 68 in the second half.

Even with things fading for Linton, the Miners had multiple chances down the stretch. Hart made a three with 1:03 left to pull Linton within 43-40.

However, it was a two-possession game the rest of the way, and Josh Furst capped the game with a dunk at the buzzer. Furst led Blackhawk in scoring this season, but it was his first points of the contest.

Blackahwk won 52-45.

Pickett finished with nineteen points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Sefton recorded sixteen points and eight rebounds, while Jimmy Davidson added nine points, seven rebounds, and two assists.

Hart scored a game-high twenty-three points. Webb contributed eleven points and five rebounds. Nathan Frady, the 2A Mental Attitude Award winner, had three points, twelve rebounds, and four assists.

The first game of the day started slowly, but the Lutheran Saints changed that in the second quarter. Led by the explosiveness of LJ Ward and shooting of Durray Smith, the Saints scored thirty-six points in the second period.

Southwood led after one, 10-9, but turnovers started to derail the Knights. Lutheran created nine first-half steals and converted them for twenty-one fastbreak points. The high-flying Ward had a big-time dunk in the second quarter to propel Lutheran.

Ward had eight points, four steals, three blocks, four rebounds, and three assists in the first half.

Will Winer scored eight of Southwood’s 16 second-quarter points, but the blitz by Lutheran was too much.

Lutheran led 45-26 at the half.

Lutheran kept the pedal down in the third quarter. The Saints scored 32 points in the third as Cayden Loescher scored in the lane, Ward slashed, and Smith continued to hit threes. Kameron Patterson filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.

Southwood continued to play hard and press, but the Knights could not make a dent in the Lutheran lead. The only question heading to the fourth was if the Saints could score 100 after Lutheran scored 68 points in two quarters.

Lutheran did not pull back much in the fourth. The Saints notched the 1A scoring record at the 4:02 mark. Lutheran broke the class record for points in a title game and tied the overall mark held by the 1955 Crispus Attucks team.

Lutheran won 97-66.

Cayden Loescher led Lutheran with 22 points, ten rebounds, and five assists. Smith finished with 21 points and four rebounds.

Ward recorded a crazy line of 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, six steals, and four blocks.

Kameron Patterson added 15 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Jason Oprisek gave Southwood 17 points and five rebounds. Cole Winer, the 1A Mental Attitude winner, recorded 15 points and six rebounds. Will Winer tallied 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Blackhawk Christian used a double double from 6'8 sophomore Kellen Pickett to win their season opener 72-61 over North Side Tuesday night. Pickett was one of three Braves in double figures as Blackhawk Christian led wire to wire.

It was fitting that on the night Blackhawk Christian dedicated their court in honor of late coach Marc Davidson, the first points scored on Marc Davidson court would come off the hand of his son, Jimmy Davidson. It was the play of the sophomore Pickett early on who helped the Braves get out to an advantage. The forward sprung free for a triple from the corner, then on the next possession drove baseline and finished through a North Side defender for a three point play. He would go on to score eight points in the opening period as the Braves held a three point lead.

It was all Blackhawk Christian in the second period, as the Braves doubled up their visitors 18-9 in the second stanza. Isaac Smith would help the home side extend their lead thanks to sinking three three pointers in the quarter. Tae Johnson kept North Side with in striking distance, scoring five of their nine points in the second and assisting on another bucket. His length and quickness on defense also forced multiple Blackhawk Christian turnovers. The result was a 12 point lead for Blackhawk heading into the locker room.

The leading scorer off last year's Braves team, Gage Sefton, struggled in the first half, picking up two quick fouls and sitting for a majority of the first 16 minutes. But it was a complete effort from the Braves to pick up the slack. Senior guard Aiden Muldoon gave good minutes off the bench, hitting a three and finding teammates as a set up man. North Side would go deep into their bench for answers, with Bravon Bassett scoring five of his team's 12 bench points, but there simply was not enough help for junior guard Tae Johnson.

The national football prospect as a wide receiver showed his athleticism all night long, filling up the stat sheet with 21 points, seven assists, and six steals. He was the only Legend in double figures, as the next highest scorer was Jaxson Fugate, who finished with nine points on a trio of shots behind the arc. Johnson would score 10 of his 21 in the fourth, trying to will his team back into the game.

In the end, perimeter shooting was the downfall of North Side. Only five of their 26 shots from behind the arc found the bottom of the net, while the Braves managed to hit half of their three point attempts, going 8-16, with Pickett registering a perfect three for three night from deep.

Blackhawk starts 1-0 on the year and will face an athletic New Haven squad on Friday, while North Side falls to 0-2 and will face Dekalb in their home opener on Friday.

North Side: Tae Johnson 21 points (8/16 FGs, 1/7 3Ps, 4/6 FTs), 3 rebs, 7 asts, 6 stls; Jaxson Fugate 9 points (3/8 3Ps), 3 rebs; Jordan Green 8 points (4/10 FGs), 3 rebs, 2 asts; Bohde Dickerson 7 points (2/4 FGs, 3/4 FTs), 2 stls; Bravon Bassett 5 points (2/3 FGs, 1/1 3Ps), 2 asts; Jordan King 4 points (1/1 FGs, 2/2 FTs), 2 rebs; Javion Davenport 4 points (2/4 FGs); Eugene Young Jr 3 points (1/1 FGs, 1/4 FTs), 3 rebs

Blackhawk Christian: Kellen Pickett 24 points (9/15 FGs, 3/3 3Ps, 3/5 FTs), 10 rebs, 2 asts; Isaac Smith 15 points (4/9 3Ps, 3/4 FTs), 2 rebs; Gage Sefton 10 points (2/3 FGs, 6/8 FTs), 6 rebs, 3 asts; Jimmy Davidson 9 points (4/10 FGs, 1/2 FTs), 8 rebs, 4 asts; Aiden Muldoon 3 points (1/2 3Ps), 5 rebs, 3 asts; Will Guthrie 2 points (1/1 FGs)

(Flory Bidunga, pictured in December, leads the sophomore team)

Indiana Basketball Source selected the top sophomores based on high school play to five teams. The criteria focused entirely on high school season production, success, and competition level.

The 2021-2022 Indiana Basketball Source all-sophomore team has a loaded first team. Kokomo’s Flory Bidunga is creating buzz on the club circuit after a tremendous first season at Kokomo. He averaged a ridiculous 17.5 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 5.3 blocks per game. The Wildkats made the 4A final four before losing a one-possession game to Chesterton. His rim finishing and protection are second to none as Bidunga shot a crazy 79 percent from two-point range for the season.

Brownstown Central’s Jack Benter posted eye-catching numbers as well. He averaged 26.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. Benter’s shooting has fans talking, and his numbers support the buzz. He shot 45 percent from three-point range and 86 percent from the free-throw line. His ability to move without the ball and make shots has college coaches making trips to Brownstown.

North Side’s Tae Johnson has produced for the Legends since entering high school. He continued to post incredible numbers as a sophomore despite missing time due to injury. The guard averaged 18.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 2.7 steals. Johnson is a fantastic athlete that will likely be a star football player in college, but he is also a tremendous basketball player. He finished 58 percent of his shots inside the arc.

Josiah Dunham posted a great sophomore season for Evansville Christian. The Eagles are a provisional IHSAA member, so they are not playing in the state tournament yet, but the schedule continues to improve. Dunham averaged 26.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game for Evansville Christian. He shot 37 percent from three-point range. He mixes physical strength, skill, and feel for the game to produce at a high level.

Ben Davis guard K.J. Windham helped the Giants to the top of the 4A rankings for most of the year. The smooth lefty averaged 12.7 points per game for a balanced and deep Ben Davis squad. Behind Windham, there were times that Ben Davis looked like the best team in the state. He shot 37 percent from three-point distance, while adding 2.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

Here is a look at all five of the Indiana Basketball Source all-sophomore teams.
