Contrasting styles clash as Zionsville takes on Crispus Attucks at the 2021 FORUM Tipoff Classic. The match-up features talented juniors, sophomores, and freshmen, but each team has a critical senior as well.
Zionsville is putting together an impressive early-season resume with wins over Carmel, Westfield, Ben Davis, and New Albany. Junior point guard Logan Imes leads the way with 20 points and five rebounds per game. He sports scholarship offers from Penn State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and others. The Eagles put the ball in Imes’ hands and go from there. That is a recipe for success.
Junior center Nick Richart patrols the paint for Zionsville. He is averaging 8.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He is also drawing D1 interest, but an injury slowed Richart’s recruitment over the summer.
Zionsville senior Isaiah Davis signed with Huntington University this fall. He is currently Zionsville’s second-leading scorer at 11.5 points per contest. In addition, he provides the Eagles with an inside-outside threat as he is shooting well from three-point range to begin the season.
Johnathan Macabee, Edward Thomas, and Matthew Wklekinski play their roles well for Zionsville. Macabee is best as a shooter, while Thomas and Wklekinski hit the boards and make hustle plays to give the Eagles extra possessions.
Attucks had 2023 forward
Jalen Hooks and 2022 guard JJ Louden leave
Indianapolis for prep schools in the fall. Christian Nunn, a Liberty Christian transfer, took over as the go-to scorer in their absences. He is a big, strong, slashing guard that thrives around the basket. Zionsville has Richart and Davis protecting the paint, but Nunn usually finds a way to score against bigger opponents.
Speaking of bigger players, freshman Dezmon Briscoe is a rising star for Attucks. He is an excellent shot-blocker and rebounder for a freshman. Briscoe is also skilled away from the basket as Briscoe will knock down threes. He will get a significant test from Richart in this one.
Briscoe is not the only youngster that Chris Hawkins plays. Sophomores Ron Rutland III and Demetrius Jenkins are key players, and freshman Chris Hurt is one of the first players off the Attucks bench as well. The future is undoubtedly bright for the Tigers.
Imes and Zionsville want to make sure the youth movement of Attucks is delayed a bit longer.
