The dominant start for freshman Cam Craig has Switzerland County sitting at 3-2, with the 2025 forward doing a bit of everything for the Pacers. Learn more about the recent winner of Indiana Basketball Source’s player of the week.
Craig won the player of the week honor by posting 32 points and seven rebounds in a blowout win over Crothersville. He helped the Pacers sprint out of the gates against the Tigers.
“Yeah, in a way (I was scoring a bunch early), but it came through our offense, so everybody got open looks,” Craig said. “Then it fell into my hands.
“After we looked at the match-ups, size-wise, they did not have anyone over six-foot, so I felt confident going into it.”
The confidence was warranted as the freshman went ten of ten from two-point range and 13 of 16 overall against Crothersville. Craig is shooting 71 percent from inside the arc and 45 percent beyond it through five games. Stout numbers for a player beginning his high school career.
Despite the excellent start, Craig’s leveled approach is not going anywhere. Although a freshman, he has a mature mindset for each game.
“Really let the game come to you,” said Craig. “Any expectations, don’t try to come out and say I’m going to have a certain amount of points or have this many shots, rebounds, whatever it is. You can’t go into there thinking that.”
He might not be thinking about numbers, but Craig averages 25 points and eight rebounds through five games. Not many high school players even have a stretch of games at that production level.
At six-foot-four, Craig is one of the biggest players on the floor in most games. That has been the case for a few years now. However, Craig knows that he cannot rely just on his height to improve.
“I need to handle the ball better. Being the tallest guy on the court all of the time, I wouldn’t say I have been pressured to be a post, but I’m definitely starting to work on the outside more and handle the ball more, especially going into college I’ll need to be a wing.
“I want to be an in-and-out type of wing that can do about anything. I need an all-around game with my athleticism and everything.”
As his attitude suggests, Craig is a student of the game. He enjoys watching certain players to learn how they produce.
“I’ve been picking up on Steph Curry lately, in the past three seasons maybe. And also (Gonzaga’s) Chet Holmgren.
“Curry’s confidence and the way he moves around the court. I definitely feel like he is one of the hardest players to guard in history because of the way he moves around the court and fills the lane.”
With his production and efficiency, there are many directions Craig could go when asked about the best part of his game. But the freshman went with an intangible.
“The favorite part of my game is my work ethic. I feel like I might not be as big as somebody, but I’ll try to outwork him no matter what.”
Switzerland County went 3-21 last season. The Pacers have had good teams in the past, but the program hit rough times recently. Switzerland County has not finished with a winning record since 2016-2017. Craig is striving to change that.
“I think we can have a solid year this season. For Switzerland County basketball, it would be a really big deal if we had a winning season. We haven’t had a winning season in forever.”
Craig won Indiana Basketball Source’s player of the week poll for November 29 through December 4. Drew Cook finished second in the voting.
