The 2022 City Alliance Tournament reached the semifinal round on Saturday, with Cathedral facing Crispus Attucks and Arsenal Tech playing Tindley.
Cathedral played without
Xavier Booker as the junior center attended a family funeral. However, the Fighting Irish did not miss a beat. After Jake Davis hit a three, Jason Delaney’s squad sprinted to a 7-0 lead. Then Jaxon Edwards slashed through the lane for a dunk and scored a second time.
Christian Nunn’s and-one put Attucks on the scoreboard nearly four minutes into the game. The Tigers responded to cut the deficit to 12-8 after Latrell Williams and Ron Rutland III scores. Unfortunately for Attucks, Cathedral opened the game from there.
The Fighting Irish created steals for transition dunks and layups regularly in the first quarter.
Tayshawn Comer converted many of the scores for Cathedral in the first quarter. Comer and Edwards combined for 16 first-period points.
Turnovers were an issue for Attucks all game as the Tigers committed 22. That led to a massive advantage for Cathedral in fastbreak points. The ability to create live-ball turnovers and turn them into points fueled the Fighting Irish offense.
Junior guard Sincere Germany caught fire in the second quarter. The lefty had a stretch of eight straight Cathedral points, and Germany created the steal that led to the following points. He helped Cathedral put the game away in the second quarter.
Nunn tried to keep Attucks competitive in the first half with eight points and six rebounds, but the Tigers were not getting enough quality looks due to their turnovers.
Junior guard Jaron Tibbs is a jack-of-all-trades for Cathedral, and he displayed that in the first half. He collected four points, five rebounds, and three assists in the opening half. Tibbs tallied five points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals for the game.
Latrell Williams provided Attucks with some good moments in the second half despite a large deficit for most of the game. The senior guard scored 16 points in the second half as he hit shots from all over the floor. Williams scored a game-high 20 points, and it could have been more as his foot was on the three-point line three times.
Cathedral pushed its lead beyond the 35-point mark to institute a running clock in the third quarter, and the Fighting Irish won 73-38.
Comer tallied 19 points and five rebounds in the win. Germany finished with 16 points, while Edwards collected nine points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Davis scored nine points for Cathedral.
Williams led Attucks with 20 points and five rebounds. Nunn finished with eight points and six rebounds. Freshman center Dezmon Briscoe swatted five shots in the loss.
Cathedral will play Arsenal Tech in Monday’s championship after the Titans dismantled Tindley.
The pace for the Tech-Tindley game was expected to be hectic, and it was. After Tindley’s Aaron Humphrey scored the game's first basket, Tech rattled off ten straight points as
Reggie Bass filled the stat sheet.
Later in the first quarter, Jayden Thomas connected on a three for Tindley to cut Tech’s lead to 14-9. But, unfortunately, that was the closest Tindley would be the rest of the game.
Tech senior Matthew Spears gave the Titans a spark off the bench. He scored five points in the first quarter to get Tech back on track.
In the second quarter,
Dayveon Turner found his rhythm. He opened the period with a three-pointer, steal, and assist within the first minute. Turner scored eight of his ten first-half points in the second quarter.
Tindley stayed within striking distance in the first half, thanks to Humphrey, Jayden Pinkston, and Jeff Pinkston. Jayden Pinkston had an incredible display of his athleticism by blocking multiple shots and finishing on the offensive end. Jayden is one of the best pure athletes around the state.
RaSheed Jones helped Tech step on the gas in the third quarter. His eight points in the middle of the stanza helped the Titans stretch their lead to 24 points. Jones finished the game with 15 points and ten rebounds.
Three minutes into the fourth, Turner threw an alley-oop off the backboard for an Antonio Lisenbee dunk. Tech’s lead swelled to 30 points after that score, and things were chippy from then on.
Arlondo Hall hit many tough shots for Tindley in the second half, but the Tigers could not keep Tech out of transition or finish well enough at the basket to cut into the deficit.
Tech coasted to the 78-56 win.
Spears finished with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Tech. Bass tallied 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals. In the win, Turner added 14 points, eight assists, and four rebounds.
Humphrey led Tindley with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Hall scored 13 points as well. Jayden Pinkston scored ten points, and Darion Davis added eight points.
Monday’s City Alliance Tournament championship game at Tech has an expected tip time of 7:30. It follows the junior varsity title game.
