(Beech-Grove vs. Brownstown Central tip at Greencastle)

Saturday was a fun, full day of Indiana high school basketball as teams had to play two sessions to secure a regional title. Here is an overview of the day around the state.

Chesterton trailed South Bend Adams at the half before pulling away in the second half. The Trojans did the same against Penn in the night game. Recap here

Kokomo surged late to beat Snider in the morning game before beating Westfield in the Logansport title game. Cam Haffner posted a big day for Westfield, but Flory Bidunga was too much. The sophomore center produced 21 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks in the title game. Morning recap here.

Cathedral slipped by Terre Haute North, while Ben Davis narrowly beat Mt. Vernon at Southport. However, Cathedral used a monster game from Xavier Booker to cruise by Ben Davis in the championship game.

The Franklin Community run continued in the first game at Seymour when it beat Floyd Central. Bloomington North is one of the hottest teams in the state and ended the Franklin run in the title game behind Nick Klaiber and JQ Roberts.

In 3A, Mishawaka Marian and Culver Academies’ anticipated match-up happened and lived up to the expectations. Marian won 39-38 behind 22 points from Richard Brooks.

Leo had a challenging path through Norwell and NorthWood, but the Lions repeated as regional champions. Trey Hiteshew and Caedmon Bontrager each scored 16 points in the final. Cade Brenner had 22 in the loss.

Danville used considerable efforts from Brady Ruggles and Tyler Dostin to beat Brebeuf in a tight game, but it was Beech Grove’s day. The Hornets used its pressure defense to disrupt Brownstown Central in the morning. Anthony Ball notched a double-double against BC with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Beech Grove cruised to a 66-50 win over Danville in the final. Morning recap here.

Sullivan used another last-second shot from Randy Kelley to beat North Harrison, then won a shootout against Evansville Bosse in the final. Kelley and Jameer Ajibade each scored 33 points in the championship game.

Central Noble and Blackhawk Christian were two of the top 2A teams all season, and they met with the North Judson on the line Saturday night. Connor Essegian pushed Central Noble over the top in overtime. Here is the recap.

Carroll (Flora) pulled one of the day’s biggest surprises when it dominated Monroe Central to the tune of 44-23 in the Lapel championship game. Chris Huerta played a massive part in the upset victory.

Eastern Hancock and University met with the Greenfield-Central title on the line, and Landon O’Neal tallied 24 points to push the Royals to the victory. Jacob Spaulding added 17.

Providence surprised the state by beating Linton-Stockton in the morning session, then held off a surging Forest Park team for the Southridge title. Drew Howard had an excellent day for Forest Park, but Casey Kaelin scored 26 in the championship game to give Providence the title.

Gary 21st Century passed two tests – North White and Triton – on Saturday. Quintin Floyd recorded two double-doubles to capture the regional title for the Cougars. Ashton Williamson is the top playmaker in the state and posted two impressive games as well.

Lafayette Central Catholic is heading to another semi-state behind relatively easy wins over Southwood and Liberty Christian. Clark Obermiller tallied 25 points in the final for LCC.

Jac-Cen-Del played two tough 1A teams – Bloomfield and Lutheran – but dispatched both. Caleb Simon and Wyatt Day posted major performances for JCD.

Jaylen Mullen and North Daviess snuck by Edinburgh before beating Borden for the Loogootee title.
