The expectations are high for New Albany this season. The Bulldogs are turning the expectations into reality after its 59-49 victory over Columbus East.
Senior guard Davon Winburn set the tone early for New Albany and continued it for the entire game. Winburn was able to get to the basket nearly any time that he wanted. He also knocked in shots from the mid-range. He scored 8 of his 19 points in the first quarter.
Columbus East has a talented duo in Connor Umphress and Parker Chitty. Both struggled in the first half which led to New Albany taking a ten point advantage to the locker room. Umphress is signed to St. Francis in Fort Wayne.
Senior wing DeAnthony Warren had a nice third quarter for New Albany. Warren is strong and quick off the dribble. He did a good job of getting to the paint and finishing.
Chitty does a good job of utilizing shot fakes to get his defender up in the air then he draws fouls. He was able to get to the line eight times mainly by doing exactly that. The iron was unkind to Chitty all night as most of his misses rimmed in and out.
Umphress started to get going in the fourth quarter as he hit a couple of deep three-pointers. His shooting combined with the Columbus East defense holding New Albany scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter helped the Olympians make it a 46-43 game.
Freshman Romeo Langford stepped up for New Albany down the stretch. He converted a couple baskets in the lane then hit free-throws to seal the game. Langford went 9-10 from line for the game.
