With the high school season over, some of the state's top seniors gathered Sunday afternoon at Marian University for the annual Top 60 workout. Generally thought of as a final chance for some to state their case for the Indiana All-Star team, others used it as a chance to showcase their game in front of over 30 college coaches. The workout is broken up into two groupings. Session 1 had players from northern and southern Indiana, while Session 2 was for those from the central part of the state.
Here are ten players who stood out today:
Devonte Campbell (6'6 PF - Culver Academy): Campbell had a great year at Culver, averaging nearly 20 points a game. His name is not well known throughout the state, however. He showed a wide array of skills, including sinking several shots from behind the arc in scrimmage play. Campbell can also get to the rim with either hand and is unselfish as well. Not a great athlete, but had a good frame and looks like he could fill out a little more too. Might be looking to do a postgrad year.
Brad Hunt (6'9 C - Jennings County): Hunt took his level of play up a notch during his senior season, and that continued today. He hit several midrange jumpers and was creative when finishing around the rim. While not the thickest post player, Hunt was able to consistently beat his man down the floor for easy buckets. He will attend IU-East next year.
Justin Mitchell (6'3 PG - Wayne): Mitchell is one of those trying to earn a spot on the
Indiana All-Star squad. His play today definitely helped in that matter. Mitchell was able to get into the lane at will, and was especially aggressive attacking in transition. He was able to finish with either hand and took on all challenges on the defensive end. The future Wright State Raider put up great numbers for Wayne this year. With the huge amount of guards in this class, it will be a borderline call as to whether or not he makes the All-Star team.
Leondre McBirth (6'1 SG - New Albany): McBirth was an unknown to us heading into the day, but his play spoke volumes about his talent. He was able to hit shots both off the dribble and in spot up situations, and showed some sneaky quickness in attacking closeouts. Looks to be more suited to play off the ball, but could be a secondary ballhandler if needed.
Cayman Meier (6'0 SG - Castle): Meier is regarded for his perimeter shooting ability, but showed that he is more than just a one trick pony. He uses shot fakes well in order to get into the midrange, where he has a very quick release on an accurate pullup jumper. He even got to the rim a couple times. A bit undersized for the two guard spot, but showed he could get others involved as well.
Elliott Welmer (6'9 PF - Columbus North): The St. Louis signee will probably go to prep school next year, as adding muscle will drastically improve his game. He hit multiple threes and was aggressive when posting up. He also fought for space when rebounding.
Jordan Furlow (6'1 PG - Speedway): one of the best athletes in the state, Furlow was a one man wrecking crew defensively during the scrimmage portion of the day. He simply overwhelmed the opposition with his lateral quickness and great hands, often times just taking the ball from the other player. He did not shoot from the outside, but got into the lane to score and find teammates for easy looks. Furlow will have to go to a junior college next year.
Jeremie Tyler (6'3 SG - Tech): Tyler's big senior season looks to have locked up a spot on the All-Star team, and he was good today as well. He didn't shoot it as well as he had during the winter, but his impact was felt on the defensive end and in transition. He keeps looking more and more like a steal for James Whitford and
Ball State.
Grant Sims (6'2 PG - Bloomington North): After nearly leading his North team to a huge comeback against Tech in semistate play, Sims showed why they advanced that far. The Future UIC Flame hit shots from all over and was able to finish at the rim against bigger opponents. More of a combo than a true point, Sims did not force anything and fed off of teammates Furlow and Tyler.
Jacob Johnson (6'6 PF - Mooresville): Johnson led Mooresville in basically every statistical category this year, and his all around game was on display today. He hit midrange jumpers, rebounded well, and maneuvered for layups. He should be able to make an impact right away for the defending NAIA D2 national champs at
Indiana Wesleyan.
Some notable players who were unable to make it today include Trey Lyles, PJ Thompson, Zach McRoberts, James Blackmon, Ernie Duncan, Tyler Jenkins, Aaron Brennan, and Tayler Persons.
