I made a point to watch for talent this weekend more than just Indiana talent. Usually, I just concentrate on watching Indiana teams and maybe top 10 nationally player if I know he is playing when I have some free time. It is good for measuring players against the rest of the nation and overall it is much more entertaining to watch good players. One player that stood out for me was Angel Nunez, 6’7 Winchendon School in MA, was just unstoppable. He showed great handles, very good quickness and explosiveness. The only thing I didn’t see him showcase was long-range shooting. It was pretty easy to see he is a HM talent even without knowing him before seeing him. He was probably the most impressive player I saw at the event. Elijah Macon, 6’8 Franklin HS in OH, dominated the inside for All-Ohio Red. Macon has a great frame and is a very good athlete. Macon was playing up in the 17U division although he is 2012. Chane Behanan, 6’7 Bowling Green HS in KY,
is a really strong forward who can handle the ball with guard skills and is extremely agile for his size. I don’t remember him hitting any outside shots although his form looked good. Jehvon Clake, 6’3 Timken HS, had a huge championship game for Ohio Basketball Club in a losing effort. He reminds me of Maurice Creek of Indiana University. Quick and athletic, but his strength was his outside shooting. He was big time. Devin Coleman, 6’3 Friends Central in PA, is a smooth, lefty shooter, who is pretty athletic. He was really tough to guard. I liked Coleman’s game a lot. Chris Martin, 6’1 Westchester Hawks, was incredible against Spiece Select. Great shooter especially off the dribble and also quick enough to get to the rim and create opportunities for his teammates.
Team Final
I stayed to watch Team Final with the intention to see the number one player in the nation Michael Gilchrist, but unfortunately for me he wasn’t with the team. Rakeem Christmas, who is also a highly rated prospect, missed the event as well. Most teams would be hurt when you are missing two of the top players in the nation but it didn’t seem to bother Team Final much. Tyrone Johnson, 6’2 Plainfield in NJ, was super smooth, good looking shooter, and athletic. Johnson finished on the break a few times well above the rim. Junior Fortunat, 6’7 Roman Catholic in PA, was trying to impersonate Amare Stoudamire in the game I saw. He is a strong, explosive, aggressive post man, and he moved really well just like Amare. Basically, a smaller version of Stoudamire.
