Terre Haute South and Avon are off to strong starts in this 2014-2015 high school basketball season. The two teams played an exciting game filled with shot-making of all sorts on Saturday night. Terre Haute South escaped with a 79-76 road victory behind the play of Jaylen Minnett.
Connor Shipley got the ball rolling for Terre Haute South with seven quick points in the first quarter. Sophomore guard Jaylen Minnett took over after Shipley started things. Minnett was unstoppable all night for Terre Haute South. His outside shot was on the money early and he consistently was able to get to the basket off the dribble.
Minnett and Shipley were not the only players that torched the nets in this game. Junior wing Brandon Peters was excellent as well. He scored 18 points in the first half. The first half shooting for both teams was incredible. Avon ended the first half shooting 82% while Terre Haute South shot 72% including 10 of 14 from the three-point line. It was 46-46 at the half.
The shooting cooled slightly in the second half but not by much. It was a close game throughout with Minnett and Peters going back and forth scoring the ball. A turning point was in the third period after freshman DeAvion Washington blocked a Brandon Peters three-point attempt. The two had to be separated on the other end. Peters was removed from the game to gain his composure. While he was on the bench, Terre Haute South made a run.
The margin was never erased by Avon. It was close down to the wire with Avon having a couple decent looks at three-pointers to tie the game, but none of the shots found the bottom of the net.
Terre Haute South moved to 3-0 on the season. Avon dropped to 2-2.
