Hendricks County Quarterfinals

Wednesday night marked the beginning of the Hendricks County Tournament, held at Avon.  Bitter cold kept the crowds down, but two squads were able to continue their hot play and advance on to the semifinals.

In the first game of the night, Brownsburg bolted out to a 18-5 advantage after a quarter on their way to a convincing 65-39 victory over Plainfield.  Darrian Ringo was the catalyst, with the senior scoring 10 first quarter points and completely disrupting Plainfield as they tried to run their offense.  Jordache Mavunga controlled the area near the rim, scoring on hook shots, floaters, and a couple mid range jumpers.  KJ Walton, playing in front of Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin, shook off a slow start to notch 13 points and four assists.

For Plainfield, sophomore forward Nathan Mills committed four turnovers in the first three minutes of the game before settling into the rhythm.  The 6'5 Mills is a good athlete and has a nice touch on his midrange jumper.  An unorthodox shooting motion limits his range and will likely prevent him from becoming a true perimeter threat unless some changes are made.  Junior Max Kurkowski made several midrange jumpers, but could not connect from behind the arc, going 0-4 on three point attempts for the evening.

Brownsburg  18  16  18  13  -  65
Plainfield        5  14    9  11  -  39

Brownsburg: Darrian Ringo 18 points (7/8 FGs, 2/3 3Ps), 5 assists, 7 steals; KJ Walton 13 points (5/12 FGs, 1/5 3Ps), 4 assists, 3 steals; Jordache Mavuna 12 points (6/11 FGs); Landon Hall 7 points, 5 rebounds; Michael Fowles 4 points; Dalton Vachon 2 points; Jimmy Sims 2 points; Adrian Chapman 2 points

Plainfield:  Nathan Mills 13 points (6/11 FGs), 6 rebounds, 4 blocks; Max Kurkowski 9 points (4/11 FGs), 8 rebounds; Dawson Messer 8 points; Conner Brens 7 points; Tyler West 2 points

In the nightcap, Tri-West gained the lead in the first quarter and was able to stave off an Avon squad playing without leading scorer Brandon Peters to win 58-49.  The Bruins led 15-12 after a quarter and held a one point advantage at the half.  Avon would come back to tie the game at 44 but Tri-West would end the game on a 14-5 run for the victory.

Tri-West's Trevor Waite came into the night averaging over 25 points per game, but struggled to a 2-for-8 start in the game.  He was picked up by sophomore forward Peyton Hendershot, who scored 12 points in the first half.  Waite found his groove in the second half, and was joined by Tyler Watson, as the freshman scored 10 points on the night.

Avon had to adjust without Peters and his 20 points per game, and Jack McCue stepped up his aggression and looking for his shot more.  One of the beneficiaries also was sophomore guard Hayden Crowder, who knocked down three triples on his way to 15 points.  While not making an impact in the scoring column, 6'4 senior Logan White cleaned up on the glass to the tune of 17 rebounds, 5 on the offensive end.

Avon       12  10  14  13  -  49

Tri-West:  Peyton Hendershot 19 points (9/14 FGs), 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals; Trevor Waite 17 points (6/14 FGs), 7 rebounds, 5 assists; Tyler Watson 10 points, 6 assists; Jake Hendershot 10 points, 6 rebounds; Connor Miller 2 points
