In a rareFridaynight game during girls sectional week, Herron traveled to Howe for a contest that was sure to be fast paced and exciting. Sloppy play ruled the first half, but Howe was able to pull away on their senior night and win comfortably 80-67.
The opening stanza was filled with pace, but lacked in execution. Both teams attempted to outrun the other, resulting in several turnovers and poor shot attempts. Herron threw Howe off a little by coming out in a triangle and two defense, with Harris Brown and Kip Warren being the targets on that defense. Brown would force some shots, but Dre'On Lewis and Jaytez Taylor were able to exploit the junk zone to grab offensive rebounds and convert inside to give Howe a four point lead after a quarter.
Harris Brown and Tyson Shumpert, the leading scorers for each of their teams, took turns hitting difficult shots in the second quarter, but Herron could not find a second option to help Shumpert. Jaytez Taylor was that second option for Howe, scoring 10 of his 12 points in the period en route to Howe's 37-26 halftime advantage.
Out of the break, Tyson Shumpert and Dre'On Lewis would trade baskets on the first few possessions, with Lewis doing his damage on the left block and Shumpert taking advantage of a huge size advantage against his defender, Chance McGraw. McGraw would rack up turnovers though, as the diminutive McGraw was able to pressure his dribble and force poor decisions.
From there, Kip Warren would catch fire from deep, hitting triples on three consecutive possessions, the last one coming on a contested pullup in transition. Howe would have a 15 point lead after the run, and would keep that advantage going into the fourth.
Herron would go on a run at the start of the final period as Tyson Shumpert broke free for multiple midrange jumpers. This prompted a switch defensively, as Harris Brown took over Shumpert duties. He quickly proved this to be a wise choice, stealing the ball from Shumpert on the next two possessions. Brown, however, would let him know about it, and was quickly slapped with a technical for his actions. The final was never in doubt, however, as Howe held on for a 80-67 win.
