On paper, Logansport against Marion looked like it was going to be a good game. It was exactly that as Logansport beat Marion 97-87 in regulation on Tuesday night at Lafayette Jefferson High School.
Marion got off to a slow start against Logansport. Junior guard Vijay Blackmon went three of three from the field in the opening quarter but the rest of the Giants were just one of 13. Blackmon's efforts kept Marion in the game, but it was an uphill battle the entire game after Logansport started the game 14-3. Sophomore guard Matt Jennings was a major reason why Logansport started the game well. He scored eight points in the first period.
Junior wing Reggie Jones started playing better in the second quarter giving Blackmon some help on the offensive end. Jones scored 10 points in the first half on his way to 28 points in the game. Logansport never slowed down though. In fact the Berries lowest scoring quarter was the second when they had 19 points. Sophomore Jalen Adaway had his mark on the game from start to finish. He nearly had a double-double by halftime when he had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Logansport broke the game open in the third quarter behind the shooting of senior Carter Skaggs. He scored 10 points in the quarter that the Logansport swelled to 15 points. The balance of Logansport gave Marion trouble. A different player stepped up for Logansport each quarter. AJ Smith was big in the first and fourth quarters on his way to 19 points. Alex Brink was consistent on his way to 19 points as well.
Marion made it a game in the fourth quarter. The Logansport lead was down to 83-77 with just over two minutes left. Logansport called a time-out and while breaking the huddle Marion coach James Blackmon received a technical foul. It did not immediately hurt Marion, but the Giants never got closer than six points. Logansport won 97-87.
Vijay Blackmon scored a game-high 35 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Reggie Jones finished with 28 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Each of the Logansport starters scored 15 points or more. Carter Skaggs led with 22 points. Jalen Adaway had 15 points, 12 rebounds and an estimated seven blocks. Alex Brink and AJ Smith each had 19. Matt Jennings finished with 16 points.
