It was Ben Davis' second game of the year when they faced Southport. The game came down to the wire with Malik Bennett hitting a game-winner. Ben Davis had a chance to avenge the loss on Friday night when the Giants played Southport in the semifinals of the Perry Meridian sectional. Southport was looking to advance its state title hopes after beating Evansville Reitz in the regular season finale last week.
Early on it looked like neither team would get to the 30 point mark for the game. The low possession game is how Ben Davis wanted to play. The Giants averaged 56 points per game while Southport averaged 71 points. A problem that developed early and continued throughout the game for Ben Davis was turnovers. Ben Davis had trouble holding onto the ball while simply passing and catching let alone handling pressure that Southport applied.
Senior guard Malik Bennett started slowly for Southport but had a big third quarter which allowed Southport to put the game away. Bennett scored 10 of his 21 points during the third period. Bennett and sophomore Paul Scruggs provided much of the scoring output for Southport. Scruggs had 13 points in the game including nine in the first half.
Southport coasted to a 45-27 victory over Ben Davis. Ben Davis finished the year with a record of 18-8.
Southport will play Pike in the sectional championship game Saturday night at Perry Meridian. Pike wasted little time jumping out to a lead against the host school. Pike led from start to finish. Ball State signee Tahjai Teague set the tone for Pike. He scored eight of Pike's first ten points.
Perry Meridian stayed within striking distance in the first half thanks to the efforts of Belmont-bound wing Dylan Windler. He scored seven of the team's 15 points in the half. Windler left it all on the court with a great second half despite shrinking hope. Windler finished with a game-high 27 points.
Pike extended its pressure to full court and put the game away in the third quarter. Pike outscored Perry Meridian 17-8 in the period to push the Red Devil lead to 20 points through three quarters. Justin Thomas and Justin Roberts terrorized the Perry guards all game. They combined for seven steals in the game. Thomas and Roberts each had 11 points as well.
Pike won going away 67-40. Perry Meridian finished the season with a 12-10 record.
