With two tournaments in town, I had to decide how I was going to cover them. The game sites were far enough away from each other that going back and forth in the same day would be dumb. So, I went to day one of the Hoosier Shootout and day two of the adidas Invitational held mainly at North Central High school. It was a loaded tournament with most of the national adidas teams in action.
Jeremy Hollowell 2012 6'7 SF Lawrence Central (Eric Gordon Central Stars) might have had the best performance of the tournament when he hit 4 3's and had 20 points in the first half against Dream Vision. His second half was very quiet though. That game really shows what Hollowell is, great talent and shows flashes of greatness but then he goes quiet and seems out of the flow of the game. I think he would fit best in a league like the SEC or ACC where he can get out and run more than a league like the Big Ten.
Patrick Ingram 2012 6'1 SG North Central (Eric Gordon Central Stars) was very impressive in the afternoon game especially in the first half. Ingram attacked the basket with a variety of dribble moves and he has the athleticism to finish over defenders. He was a bit under the radar before this spring, but he has picked up a handful of offers now. Ingram is an elite defender and that never hurts your recruiting.
Austin Etherington 2011 6'6 SF Hamilton Heights (Indiana Elite-Team Indiana) had a great game when I saw him. Etherington was very active, getting steals, deflections, blocking shots, knocking down 3's. He is going to be okay in the Big Ten because of his length, basketball IQ, and ability to hit shots.
Cody Zeller 2011 6'10 PF Washington (Indiana Elite-Team Indiana) is good, fundamental, skilled but he might be getting overrated at this point. He is not going to be a one and done type of player. He isn't going to put a program on his back as a freshmen and lead them to a national title. He will be a very good player though.
Yogi Ferrell 2012 5'11 PG Park Tudor (Indiana Elite-Team Indiana) struggled in the game I saw. Ferrell didn't start the game and it seemed like he was out of flow for the whole game. He didn't finish in the lane a few times and usually he finishes everything.
Mitchell Paige 2012 5'9 PG Guerin Catholic (Spiece-Rapp) can really shoot the ball from the outside. He is definitely small, but he is tough, handles the ball well and is a decent athlete. He will probably end up being a really good D2/NAIA player down the road.
Riley Rapp 2012 6'2 CG Guerin Catholic (Spiece-Rapp) does a lot of things on the court well. He is a decent athlete, good shooter, can handle the ball, and will rebound from a guard position. LM-/D2 prospect right now.
Nick Osborne 2012 6'7 PF Muncie Central (Eric Gordon Central Stars) was compared to Kris Humpries by a coach I was sitting with Wednesday. Appearance wise it is right on, both have high motors, both really strong. Osborne will need to improve his perimeter skills greatly to be Humpries though. Osborne seems like a great MM prospect.
Ronnie Johnson 2012 6'0 PG North Central (Eric Gordon Central Stars) never goes right and he still gets to the rim whenever he wants. Johnson doesn't even dribble with his right hand against traps unless he really has to. It doesn't hurt him right now, but he will need to start working on it for college.
Dylan Langkabel 2012 6'3 SG St. Benedict's NJ (Eric Gordon Central Stars) played great down the stretch in the first game I watched. Langkabel drove a lot more than he had been in the spring. This could be because he is healthy...he rolled his ankle in the spring. LM-MM prospect, it will be interesting to see how he develops while attending St. Benedict's in NJ.
