In the 1A IHSAA boys basketball final, Marquette Catholic and Barr-Reeve squared off from the third time over the last year. Marquette defeated Barr-Reeve for the 2014 championship in overtime. Barr-Reeve avenged the loss this time around with the score of 65-50.
Duncan Roy came out on fire early in the game. He scored eight quick points for Barr-Reeve as the Vikings jumped out to an early lead. He had an overall solid game as he finished with 17 points.
Junior guard Tommy Wilson gave Marquette a boost off the bench after the Blazers got down 21-9. Wilson attacked the basket twice which started a 6-0 run for Marquette. The run was quickly answered by Barr-Reeve and senior guard Seth Swartzentruber. He rattled off five straight points and the Blazer momentum was shut off.
Barr-Reeve was methodical in the first half never using a major run to create its advantage. It was a series of five and seven point runs which aided Barr-Reeve's 14 point halftime lead.
Barr-Reeve struggled to shoot the ball in the third quarter and Wagler picked up his third foul, but Marquette was unable to cut into the lead. Ryan Fazekas showed life for Marquette scoring seven points in the quarter after having just five points at halftime.
The trio of Swartzentruber, Roy and Wagler were too much for Marquette. The three players scored 45 points in the Barr-Reeve victory while the only players in double figures for Marquette were Fazekas and Tommy Wilson. He tallied 18 points in the loss.
Barr-Reeve set the 1A state finals record with 26 made free throws in the game. The Vikings hit 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
The 1A state title was the first boys basketball championship for Barr-Reeve. Head coach Bryan Hughes captured his first state title after guiding Barr-Reeve to the title game four other times.
Barr-Reeve and Marquette Catholic will each move to 2A next year due to the IHSAA success factor.
