The 3A state championship between Griffith and Guerin Catholic received a lot of press thanks to the unusual circumstances that Griffith entered the tournament while Guerin coach Pete Smith added some fuel to the fire this week. Both crowds were into the game from the start and provided the teams with plenty of energy.
The game had terrific energy throughout. Both teams played with excellent effort but it was the team that executed the best that prevailed. Early in the game, Tremell Murphy played at a high level for Griffith.
The game was back and forth for the first half then Griffith used an 8-0 run to take control of the game in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was a fantastic eight minutes of basketball with both teams laying it on the line.
It was senior forward Matt Holba that kept Guerin Catholic in the game when Griffith gained control of the game. He had an impact in every phase of the game for Guerin. He scored 11 of Guerin's first 15 points of the second half. Once others joined the scoring column, Guerin took control of the game.
Anthony Murphy picked up his fourth foul early in the fourth quarter, but his teammates picked up the slack when he went to the bench. Anthony Harris filled the stat sheet for Griffith including a pretty assist to Tremell Murphy midway through the fourth quarter.
The momentum swung fully in Guerin's direction when Matt Labus hit a 3-point then Christian Munson scored on a backdoor cut immediately after that. Those two plays started a 9-0 run that sealed the game for Guerin Catholic.
Holba willed his team to the win. He finished with 29 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and three assists. Christian Munson contributed 12 points including seven points in the fourth quarter.
Tremell Murphy led Griffith with 17 points. He also had seven rebounds and two blocks. Anthony Harris had 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
