The debate for the best team in Indiana was between Homestead and Evansville Reitz for most of the season. It was settled on the court Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
There was shaky ball handling for Homestead early but ended the first quarter taking care of the ball better. Ball-handling would decide the game in the end. Colgate-bound center Dana Batt was strong at the beginning of the game collecting five points, three rebounds and three blocks.
The game seesawed back and forth for the first three quarters. Jordan Geist was a key for Homestead especially early. Reitz pressures guards like few teams and Geist did a solid job of handling the pressure as well as could be expected. He made Reitz pay by finishing at the basket when Homestead beat the pressure.
Alex Stein had a fantastic season for Reitz and the championship game was no different. He set the tone early for Reitz attacking and scoring in the lane. He scored 10 of his 26 points in the first half. Stein's toughness was shown after he took a hard hit to the head while diving for a loose ball. He was down for over a minute, but he returned to game shortly there after.
Toledo-bound guard Jaelan Sanford established himself early in the contest for Reitz as well. He knocked down a couple early shots and was aggressive throughout. He hit a shooting downswing in the middle of the game, but Sanford came up big late.
The up and down pace was not ideal for Caleb Swanigan to dominate the smaller Reitz team, but he did have a huge impact especially late. It took him awhile to get used to the officiating before handling the ball, cleaning the glass and finishing at a high level. He finished with 20 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and six turnovers.
The game was tied going to the fourth quarter. Evansville Reitz started the period with 10 straight points to create the first separation between the two teams all game. Stein and Sanford were leading the way. Reitz was up eight points with a few minutes left in the game. Given that Reitz is a great shooting team and all of their players can handle the ball, Homestead was in a deep hole.
Reitz seemed to be in control for most of the fourth quarter until Tahj Curry made a huge impact. He started by getting to the line then he created turnovers and scored going to the basket late. Homestead cut the Reitz lead to four points a couple times with under 100 seconds left in the game. Everything shifted in Homestead's favor when Curry was able to steal a Reitz in-bound pass after it was tipped by the on-ball defender. He scored within seconds of getting the steal to cut the deficit to two points.
After a time out, Reitz was able to get the ball in cleanly before turning the ball over again when Homestead trapped the ball. Once again it was Curry that capitalized on the change of possession with a layup.
The game was tied with 46 seconds left and Reitz worked the clock for a final shot. Head coach Michael Adams trusted his team and did not call a time out. Reitz ended up getting a solid look from Alex Stein on a deep 3-pointer. It did not go down, Dru Smith was able to get the offensive rebound but Swangian blocked his shot attempt. The game was improbably heading to overtime.
With the way that regulation ended, it was going to be an uphill battle in overtime for Reitz. It takes a strong mindset to recover from the change in events. Stein was able to a steal and take it to the other end for a layup to begin overtime. It was a good start for Reitz.
Homestead rattled off nine straight points after the Stein layup. Most teams facing a seven point deficit would be done but not Reitz. Sanford knocked down three 3-pointers in the overtime frame, but in the end it was too much Curry and Swanigan. Curry scored seven points in the overtime and assisted on another basket. Geist converted two free throws with 9.2 seconds left to put Homestead up four points. It was a good thing, for Homestead, that he hit both because Sanford hit a 3-pointer with seconds left. Unfortunately for Reitz, the team was out of timeouts and the clock ran out.
Homestead won the 2015 4A state championship with the score of 91-90 in overtime. The teams scored 35 points in the four minute overtime.
Tahj Curry finished with 23 points, six assist and five rebounds with most of his contribution coming late in the game. Caleb Swanigan tallied 20 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Jordan Geist finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and only four turnovers against the Reitz pressure. Dana Batt fouled out but collected 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks before being disqualified.
Alex Stein led Reitz with 26 points. He also had three steals, four rebounds and five assists. Sanford ended with 24 points including nine points in overtime. Dru Smith finished with 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Homestead only had one turnover the last seven minutes of the game including overtime. That was a major reason that they prevailed. Homestead also had 62 points in the paint compared to 28 for Reitz.
Reitz led for 15:01 of the game, Homestead led for 14:20 and it was tied for 5:34.
