The IBCA top 100 workout usually takes place in April, but was moved to July this year so college coaches could observe. It is a good idea, but it is right after most of the players have been playing two or three games a day for the last week. Most of the players appeared fatigued especially mentally. The workout was still a good event and hopefully next year more of the elite players will come participate. I'm going to break the report down a little bit differently...by projected college level this time.
High-Major Prospects
Cody Zeller 2011 6'10 PF Washington has to be given a lot of credit for showing up and competing pretty hard. A lot of the top talent that was invited didn't show to the event. Brandon Dawson, Marquis Teague, Jeremy Hollowell, A.J. Hammons, Gary Harris, Mitch McGary were all no-shows. Zeller played in front of coaches from Butler, Indiana, and North Carolina.
Glenn Robinson 2012 6'5 SF Lake Central played very well in the game and drills I saw Monday. Robinson probably won't be the 6'8 or 6'9 that his dad was, but he will be very good because he is long, explosive, and has a good skill set. He is more of a mid-range shooter than a three point shooter at this point, but I have no doubt that his range will continue to improve.
Bryson Scott 2013 6'1 PG Fort Wayne Northrop absolutely dominated this event. He was making good defenders look below average as he blew by them or hit shots over them. With a Purdue offer early and likely an Indiana offer coming soon, there is no doubt in my mind Bryson will be a high major point guard in a few years. His aggressiveness combined with his skill set makes him unstoppable at the high school level.
V.J. Beachem 2013 6'6 SF Fort Wayne Harding opened some eyes at the workout. Beachem received some bad press for leaving the stacked Spiece Indy Heat 2013 team earlier this spring, but Monday might have made people forget that. Beachem looks like he is still growing...a true 6'6 at this point and could be a little bit taller than that. His shooting ability is his strength right now and strength is probably his biggest weakness. Rumor was that Purdue offered Beachem after the workout, but I haven't gotten any confirmation on this.
Yogi Ferrell 2012 6'0 PG Park Tudor might have been the most dominant player along with Bryson Scott. Ferrell didn't look fatigued from the last week of tournaments at all. He looked fresh and played with a lot of energy. I think some of that might be attributed with how much he works out with Coach Ed Schilling and NBA players at the Champions Academy. I always say if you are going to be a small point guard at the high major level then you have to be ultra quick/explosive and Ferrell is exactly that. He is a blur at times going coast to coast for a lay-up.
Austin Etherington 2011 6'6 SF Hamilton Heights always plays with high intensity. His motor can never be questioned even in this setting he was playing defense and rebounding like it was the biggest game of his life. Etherington had a big-time block that he swatted off the backboard with his left-hand. He looks to be in great shape and is showing more and more athleticism, which is a good sign with his past injuries.
Mid-Major Prospects
Alex Pritchett 2011 6'7 PF Bedford North Lawrence had a great stretch of plays where he went coast to coast for a dunk, then hit a three, and then got another breakaway dunk. I still believe Pritchett would be much better at the low-major level than mid-major, but he can play at the MM level.
Jonny Marlin 2011 5'11 PG Center Grove has been attracting a lot of attention lately. He flew under the radar for most of his high school career, but that has changed now playing with Andy Smeathers and Donnie Hale for Speice All-Indiana. Marlin is definitely a pure point guard, looking to set-up teammates instead of looking to score. He is tough and will pressure the ball full court. Marlin has had a very impressive July thus far.
Brenton Scott 2013 5'11 PG Fort Wayne Northrop is very similar to his twin Bryson. Brenton doesn't shoot it quite as well and he doesn't get to the rim as easily as Bryson does. Brenton does play just as hard as Bryson though. Brenton will be at least a Mid-Major prospect.
Nick Hutcheson 2012 6'6 PF Greencastle is probably on the LM/MM border as a prospect. Hutcheson is pretty athletic and finishes well with his right hand. If he can finish with his left hand as well as he does with his right hand then his stock would go up.
Evan Maschmeyer 2011 6'3 SG Jeffersonville is the sleeper of the 2011 class. He didn't put up huge numbers for Jeffersonville this year, but they were 22-5 so obviously he is helping them win. He shoots it well, finishes well although he isn't going to wow you with his athleticism, above average laterally on defense, knows the game. Basically, a guy that is going to help teams win games.
Justin Gant 2011 6'8 PF Terre Haute North played well especially early. The recent Indiana State commit will take the rest of the summer off to help get healthy. Gant could be very good in the Missouri Valley conference as long as he continues to work on his aggressiveness and toughness inside.
Austin Richie 2011 6'1 CG Lowell doesn't look like he could drop 50 points on you, but clearly he can since he did it last season. He plays the game with a lot of confidence, not afraid to take any shot. Defensively, he isn't great but he isn't terribly bad either. Could be a good role player at the MM level, but probably won't be playing the point unless he totally changes his game.
Tyler Greathouse 2011 6'9 PF Columbus North shot the ball really well Monday. There aren't many if any 6'9 guys at the high school level that can shoot as well as Greathouse. Shooting as never been the question for college coaches though. It has always been...is he tough enough to defend D1 post players, is he aggressive enough to compete at a high level of competition? Greathouse definitely has the offensive game to get it done.
Mike Ramey 2012 6'4 SG Southport shot the ball as well as Greathouse did. It seems like arc on his shot is the only time he misses. When he is off, his shot is very flat. A pretty good athlete, it seems like he will be able to defend at the MM level.
Andy Smeathers 2011 6'6 SF Center Grove seemed very fatigued Monday. His shot wasn't what it was at the Hoosier Shootout, but I hear he had a great Kentucky Hoopfest showing. Smeathers should be great at the MM level as long as he can put some muscle on his very thin frame. I don't believe he will get a Purdue or Butler offer and those are the biggest programs that have been watching from what I have seen.
Jeremiah Jones 2011 6'3 SG Merrillville played very well Monday. He is another sleeper in the 2011 class. A good athlete, but not an outstanding athlete. Jones is very good off the dribble and finishes well in the lane. Overall, a very solid skill set.
Low-Major Prospects
Matt Schauss 2011 6'4 SG Centerville shot well and played pretty well overall from what I saw Monday. Always known as a shooter with good length...defense and effort as been the question. I said on twitter last week that college coaches will immediately pass on players that don't play hard. This could be the case with Schuass because he isn't the quickest player laterally to begin with then combine that with an effort question mark. I hope he gets a chance because I think he could be really good at a LM that plays zone. Use his length in the zone.
Eric Stutz 2011 6'7 PF Castle is a new player for me. I had never seen him before Monday. The game I watched, he was matched up against Cody Zeller. Stutz held his own for the most part but he just doesn't have the strength that Zeller has. Stutz has a good motor, rebounds well, pretty good skill set, but is very thin.
Spike Albrecht 2011 6'2 PG Crown Point caught my eye with his shooting and passing. Albrecht also rebounds the ball well for a guard. Albrecht isn't the quickest or most athletic player, but he knows the game well and anticipates really well. He had a huge year for Crown Point last year although they struggled as a team.
A.J. Schmidt 2011 6'1 SG Providence is a knock down spot-up shooter. Undersized for the SG position, I think he would be a better fit at the D2/NAIA level than the LM level but he definitely could be a role player at the LM level in the right situation.
Joe Crisman 2011 6'4 SG Munster is the ultimate glue player. A glue guy that is athletic, can defend, hit open shots, and rebound. He plays AAU with the Illinois Wolves so he basically is playing the exact role he would play in college. Crisman puts winning first, that's for sure!
Spencer Turner 2011 6'3 SG Bloomington South has been trying to add more diversity to his game. Turner has been putting the ball on the floor more in July than I have seen him do in the past. It will be a struggle for him to defend at the D1 level, but he is strong and tough so I wouldn't put it past him.
Jon Trawick 2011 6'2 SF Richmond is the ultimate tweener at 6'2 or 6'3 he is more of a power forward/small forward than a shooting guard. Trawick is very strong, consistent shooter from 17 feet, and explosive off the floor. He does struggle to defend. Trawick could probably be pretty dominant at the D2 level.
Nick Bollenbacher 2012 6'1 PG Hanover Central absolutely does not look like a D1 player by appearance alone. Bollenbacher was tough though, he hit shots from the outside and he drove past defenders for lay-ups. This was my first look at Bollenbacher, but I think he is a LM/D2 prospect. He has a pretty small frame right now so if he could add some muscle, it would help him immensely.
