This game featured two future Indiana Hoosiers in Ron Patterson (2012) and Collin Hartman (2013) plus both are pretty good teams. Add in the fact that Broad Ripple retired the jersey of Steven Jamison, who passed away in July, before the game. The intensity and emotion was high from the tip.
Broad Ripple came out and played well early. Ron Patterson hit a couple of threes and had 8 points for the quarter. Hartman didn't see the ball very much and only had 3 points after 1. Broad Ripple led 16-13 through one quarter of play.
Cathedral heated up in the second though. Hartman and Patterson were matching basket for basket during one stretch. Patterson scored 10 more points in the quarter for 18 at the half time break. Hartman scored 8 in the quarter for a total of 11 first half points. Brandon Smith gave Cathedral a big boost and had 14 points in the half. The Irish took a slim 37-33 lead to the locker room.
The high scoring, fast paced action continued in the third quarter. Sophomore Mo Evans, 5'8" point guard, played well in the quarter and hit a couple of shots. Evans will be a player to watch...he seemed very steady with the ball and didn't make many mistakes. It was 54-53 through three quarters of action.
The fourth quarter was plagued by turnovers. The scoring slowed down considerably. Aaron Payne, 6'1" point guard 2012, took over for Broad Ripple. He hit a lot of big shots to keep his team in the game. After some chaotic plays, Brandon Smith went to the line for a one and one with a 66-65 lead and about 7 seconds left. He missed the front end, but Chandler Thomas was there for the rebound and put it back in to seal the game for Cathedral.
Cathedral 68-65 win. Brandon Smith (2011) led Cathedral with 27 points, Collin Hartman had 14 points, Chandler Thomas 10 points and 8 rebounds, Mo Evans 7 points. Broad Ripple was led by Ron Patterson's 25 points and Aaron Payne had 16.

Ron Patterson 6'3" SG Broad Ripple 2012 Patterson shot the ball well from deep going 5-10 from 3 by my count. He didn't do much damage getting to the rim though. I think he could have gotten to the rim more if he wanted to, but instead he settled for 3's which turned out to work.
Collin Hartman 6'6" SF Cathedral 2013 Hartman shot it really well from the outside but he didn't get the ball all that much. He didn't see the ball at all in the fourth quarter and had limited touches in the third quarter. The only quarter he did a lot of damage in was the second where he had 8 points. Hartman is definitely going to be special down the road, but he has to demand the ball more even though he is only a sophomore.
Brandon Smith 5'11" PG Cathedral 2011 The Lynn College commit had a huge game. He scored inside, outside and went 4-4 from the line. Smith did have a handful of turnovers so it wasn't a perfect game for him although he had 27 points.
Jared Drew 6'6" SF Cathedral 2012 Probably the biggest surprise of the game was Drew. He only had 2 points and 2 rebounds by my count. Now, he did have some foul issues but he was on the court a decent amount. Drew was just a total non-factor on the offensive end. Defensively, he did a good job against Patterson. It was strange to see him only get 3 shots.
Aaron Payne 6'1" PG Broad Ripple 2012 Payne did some really nice things in the fourth quarter. He hit a couple of floaters, a couple of finishes in the lane against contact, hit a 3 from the corner, and was 5-7 from the line in the game. There are a ton of really good point guards in the 2012 class so Payne can get lost in the shuffle. I wish he was a bit more of a pure point guard, but he could be really good at the D2/ NAIA level.
Chandler Thomas 6'5" PF Cathedral 2011 I liked how Thomas played in the game tonight. I have always respected his post game and the toughness he plays with. What I have questioned is "can he play the perimeter at the next level?" He is a good athlete so he could get away being a power forward at the D2/NAIA level. He probably wouldn't be able to get away with it at the D1 level. He got to a lot of tough rebounds none bigger than his rebound off a free-throw miss with 6 seconds left.
Mo Evans 5'8" PG Cathedral 2013 Small and quick, he showed the ability to get into the lane consistently against some really good athletes. Evans also knocked down a 3. He will be a player to watch through this season and summer.
David Hill 6'0" PG Cathedral 2013 Hill wasn't a huge factor in the game. He was only 1-4 from the field and I didn't watch him too closely on defense. I know he will have much bigger games this year. Hill and Evans will provide Cathedral with a nice back court for years to come.
Josh Sullen 6'3" SG Cathedral 2013 Sullen is a nice looking athlete that seems to have a good skill set to go with that. He didn't play a big role down the stretch but he played really well in the first half when Drew was out with 2 fouls.
Collin Barthel 6'5" SF Cathedral 2014 Didn't get much playing time, but to even get on the court in a game like this as a freshmen means you are pretty good. Add Barthel to the names to watch list for 2014.
Mo Cross 6'4" SF Broad Ripple 2012 Cross is very streaky. One game he will look great and the next he will be below average. Cross is a really good athlete that is at his best when he is attacking the rim and going after rebounds. D2/NAIA prospect.
