adidas Spring Classic: Day 2

Day two of the adidas Spring Classic saw us spend about 14 hours in the gym. We were planning on posting the full report of the day, but we will save the majority of the evaluations for the recap after the tournament has concluded. That will keep us from repeating any evaluations.

Point guard play really excelled on Saturday with P.J. Thompson (2014) and Hyron Edwards (2015) being the two that stood out the most. Both made some great passes while still scoring (inside and outside) and leading their teams to victories.

Here are 14 player evaluations from Saturday's action.

2013

Trevion Boyd 6'4" SF Anderson/Indiana Elite Stars- Boyd is another guy that looks like a player at 6-4 and well built. He is active and finishes around the rim. It seems like he would be best at a level where he can be a power forward type prospect instead of a small forward, so likely D2/NAIA.

Joe Fagan 6'3" SG Chatard/Indiana Elite Stars- Fagan was very quiet He had a step-back 3 but that was about it. Low-major prospect

Sam Philpott 6'7" SF Noblesville/Indiana Elite Stars- He is a great catch and shoot player. He's pretty well built and moves decently, but he is very one-dimensional. Low-major/low-major stretch at this point.

John McCloud 6'5" SF Lawrence Central/Indiana Elite Stars- He looks the part at 6-5 and strong, but I've never seen him produce against good competition. I think he is a low-major/low-major stretch unless his production really picks up.

Richard Freeman 6'7" PF Lawrence Central/Indiana Elite Stars- His skill set just isn't there. He is good in transition but that is about it. He has a lot of passes go right through his hands. It will take him awhile to contribute in college, even at the low-major level.

Jordan Pickett 6'0" PG University/Indiana Elite Stars- He is definitely a shooting guard trying to be a point guard. He is a score first type of player, so he misses a lot of passes that need to be made. He will be best somewhere (mid-major) where he can play a little point and off the ball as well.

Michael Clements 6'7" PF Roncalli/Indiana Elite Stars- struggled offensively against the bigger Michigan Mustangs. He is all right hand around the basket. The class is really thin with bigs though and he is an active, strong, big body. He is a low-major prospect at best.

Mo Evans 6'1" PG Cathedral/Indiana Elite Stars-Evans makes the right pass when it needs to be made, which is always nice from a point guard. He does struggle to finish in traffic at times but he seems to finish well in transition. He has nice length for a low-major point guard prospect.

2014

Jacob Foster 6'6" PF Wapahani/FH Elite 2014- Foster has been a pleasant surprise this spring. I liked him last spring, but his game has really expanded. He shoots it well to 20 feet. He has the quickness and athleticism to get to the rim against most power forwards. Plus, he is tough and will battle in the paint with a nice touch. Foster is a low-major plus prospect right now.

Aaron Brennan 6'6" PF Guerin Catholic/FH Elite 2014- He had a nice sweep-drive against a bigger player. He also showed nice hands. Brennan definitely struggles in the post against bigger defenders though.

Aaron Korn 6'4" SG Frankton/FH Elite 2014- I haven't seen a bunch of Korn other than this AAU season but he does a lot of nice things. He is a true 6-4 with good length and athleticism. He is really good off the dribble getting to the basket or pulling up for a mid-range jumper. He is probably a low-major plus prospect right now.

Evan Henry 6’2” SG Columbus North/FH Elite 2014- Very smooth and heady player that is a good outside shooter. He needs to do more off the dribble and create his own shot. He is extremely thin right now and added muscle would help him a lot.

Whit Rapp 5’11” PG Guerin Catholic/FH Elite 2014- Rapp is very solid with the ball. He isn’t explosively quick to the basket, but he seems to get into the lane often. He is a pure point guard that looks to pass first and score when he has to.

Troy Spears 6’4” SF Park Tudor/Indiana Elite-South- Spears has been pretty disappointing so far this spring. It’s not just that he isn’t producing much when I see him; it seems like his body language and attitude is very bad. He’s not very explosive off the dribble. He is a good spot-up shooter though. At this pace, he could struggle to compete at New Mexico. {/iACL}
