The second week of Indiana high school basketball is upon us. There are a few teams this week making their season debuts, so let's take a look at ten of the best games from around the state. All times listed are Eastern.
Tuesday, December 1st
North Side at Blackhawk Christian 7:30 pm
Freshman Brauntae Johnson made his varsity debut last week a memorable one, going for 26 points and 11 boards in a thrilling win over Mississinewa. The 6'3" guard was able to make plays off the bounce and get to the free-throw line. He's joined by experienced juniors Ryan Collins and Rodney Woods. They take on Blackhawk Christian, with Mr. Basketball candidate Caleb Furst in the middle. The forward, who has committed to Purdue, is looking to build on a fantastic junior season that saw him average 22 points and 11 rebounds a night. Fellow seniors Zane Burke and Marcus Davidson offer plenty of firepower from the perimeter.
Pike at Plainfield 7:30 pm
The Red Devils opened their season on Saturday with an 84-73 win over Hamilton Southeastern. The three-headed monster of Eddie Jones, Ryan Conwell, and JJ Louden can create havoc at both ends of the floor. Coach Bill Zych wants his team to generate turnovers, which they did with ease against HSE. Ian Scott is off to a great start to his senior year for Plainfield. The 6'7" forward notched a pair of 20 point double doubles in wins over Avon and Cascade last week. Point guard Aidan Booher added 18 against Avon on the back of four three-pointers.
Friday, December 4th
Fishers at Noblesville 7:30 pm
The quartet of Bryce Williams, Drew Turner, Sean Millsaps, and Charlie Smith combined for 57 of Fishers' 75 points in a runaway win over Ben Davis to start their season. The win was even more impressive as it came without junior forward Jeff Simmons, who averaged over 16 points a game last season. Noblesville split their games last week, with a one-point loss to Tindley followed by a win over Columbus East. Sophomore sharpshooter Luke Aldomovar averaged 20 points over those two games, and he's supported by freshman guard Aaron Fine, who chipped in eight points a game last week.
Hammond at Munster 8:00 pm
Two of the Region's finest go head to head in this battle of two schools separated by three and a half miles of Calumet Avenue pavement. Darrell Reed and Harold Woods form a potent inside-outside combo for the Wildcats, who won 20 games a year ago. Senior point guard Reggie Abrams also returns to add playmaking to the backcourt. Munster returns a formidable duo of their own in wing Luka Balac and combo forward Clayton Bubash. The Mustangs only lost two games last season, but one was a 67-55 defeat at the hands of Hammond.
South Bend Riley at Mishawaka Marian 7:30 pm
Recent Notre Dame signee Blake Wesley looks to make a run at Mr. Basketball this season. He knows for that to happen, Riley needs to improve on their 12-11 mark from a year ago. They got off to a good start with a 21 point win over LaPorte last week. Phillip Robles and Jackson Copley return as starters for Riley. Marian lost standout guard Jerry Bracey to graduation, but Deaglan Sullivan returns to build on a freshman campaign that saw him average just under 15 points a game. Ky'Rell Franklin, Mitchell Menting, and Kaleo Kakalia also return as significant contributors from the Knights' 22 win squad.
Westfield at Zionsville 7:30 pm
This game could give the winner an early stronghold on the Hoosier Crossroads title race. Westfield returns guard Braden Smith, who broke out a year ago in leading Westfield to one of their best seasons in recent memory. Smith averaged 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game a year ago. Junior classmates Cam Haffner and Nic Depasquale also averaged in double figures last season as sophomores. Zionsville has a new coach in JR Howell, and the youth movement is in full swing for the Eagles. Sophomores Logan Imes and Nick Richart look to capitalize on a year of experience gained as freshmen last season. The Eagles won their opener against Ben Davis by a 49-36 score.
Saturday, December 5th
Warren Central vs. Crispus Attucks 3:00 pm (Brownsburg)
Size and athleticism is the story for this year's edition of the Attucks Tigers. Sensational 6'7 sophomore Jalen Hooks transfers in from Franklin Central, and he joins 6'3 Donavan Barnett, 6'3 Qu'Shawn Ware, and 6'5 Jaylen Carson to give Coach Chris Hawkins plenty of length. Warren Central counters with size of their own in 6'4" Chandler Jackson and 6'5" Tae Davis, who transferred from Lawrence Central after his father was named head coach at Warren Central. Mainstay Malik Stanley gives the Warriors a veteran playmaker in the backcourt who should be able to handle the pressure that Attucks will bring.
Greencastle at Indian Creek 7:30 pm
Brody Whitaker put up eye-popping numbers a year ago for Greencastle, and he's looking to do it again for a team looking to make their name in 3A. The 6'3 guard dropped 24 points, 7 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals in a season-opening loss to Crawfordsville last week. Junior Evan Alexander went 5-10 from behind the arc in that game for the Tigers, and he'll need to be a reliable second option for Greencastle. Indian Creek is 1-1 on the young season. Following a blowout of rival Franklin in the season opener, the Braves lost a heartbreaker by a single point to Edinburgh. Mason Britt returns as the team's leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago, averaging 18 and 7 a night. Three other starters return from a team that won 18 games a season ago.
Gary West at Michigan City 8:00 pm
Great talent comes in all sizes, and that's no more apparent than in this matchup, as West Side's ultra-talented junior Jalen Washington returns after missing the entire season a year ago. The 6'9 Washington can play all over the court, and he's got a talented supporting cast around him as well. Point guard Quimari Peterson, wing Chrishawn Christmas, and center Mason Nicholson make up a talented roster that should have the Cougars poised for a deep March run. The other side of the size comes from Jamie Hodges, the 5'8 dynamo for Michigan City. He's been a staple of the Wolves roster since the start of his freshman year. This could be a high scoring contest as Michigan City put up 111 against Marquette Catholic on Saturday.
Homestead vs Cathedral 8:00 pm (Brownsburg)
Homestead has great firepower on the wing with senior Illinois signee Luke Goode and junior Purdue-bound Fletcher Loyer. Throw in talented junior forward Andrew Leeper and the Spartans are looking to play deep into March this season. Point guard could be a question mark for the Spartans after three-year starter Zak Kruger graduated last year. Cathedral features a balanced lineup as five players averaged between 12 and 16 points in their two wins last week. Juniors Tayshawn Comer, Pete Moe, and Jaxon Edwards join seniors Jalen Johnson and Vincent Brady to form one of the most talented starting fives in the state for the Irish.
