(Pictured: Curt Hopf will lead Barr-Reeve against Southridge this week)
Indiana Basketball Source takes a look at another great week of Indiana high school basketball as conference games are starting to take place around the state. There are also tons of great non-conference games happening as well. Here's a look at ten of the best matchups taking place this week. All times listed are Eastern.
Tuesday, December 8
3A No. 5 Bishop Luers at 3A No. 8 Leo 6:45 pm (Summit City Sports)
Northeast Indiana 3A supremacy is on the line as reigning SAC champ Bishop Luers travels to face off against Leo. Bishop Luers returns standout guard Naylon Thompson, who was a first-team All-SAC selection a year ago. Leo brings the size inside with post DJ Allen and guard Blake Davison makes them go on the perimeter. Leo is already 3-0 on the year against SAC schools, having defeated South Side, Wayne, and Snider.
Wednesday, December 9
Brownsburg at No. 8 Crispus Attucks 7:30 pm
Brownsburg hopes to have the services of Butler signee Pierce Thomas, who sat out their game on Saturday when they take on Crispus Attucks. Look for Quentin Bragg and Luke Lacey to pick up the slack if Thomas is unable to go. Attucks is coming off a victory over Warren Central on Saturday behind 22 points from Isaiah Stafford and a near double-double from Jaylen Carson. Sensational sophomore Jalen Hooks could pose a matchup problem for Brownsburg.
Lawrence Central at No. 1 Lawrence North 7:30 pm
Maybe the best rivalry in the entire state, Lawrence Township will be focused on this one as the Bears travel to play the Wildcats. It's a new look for Coach Al Gooden, who lost Dre Davis (Louisville) and Nijel Pack (Kansas State) to graduation, and Tae Davis, who transferred to Warren Central. Greg Jenkins has picked up the slack from the lead guard spot, and he'll need a huge performance to carry the Bears to victory. Senior guard Dameriz Merriweather is off to a strong start as well. He's a quick guard with deep range and plenty of confidence. LN returns everyone but Tony Perkins from last year's squad that handed Lawrence Central their only three losses of the season. Guards CJ Gunn and Shamar Avance will need to test a relatively inexperienced LC backcourt and look for DJ Hughes to assert himself early on the interior.
Friday, December 11
No. 6 Floyd Central at No. 15 New Albany 7:30 pm
Another great rivalry game takes place on the banks of the Ohio River as Air Force commitment Jake Heidbreder and his Floyd Central Highlanders face off against Kaden Stanton and the New Albany Bulldogs. Heidbreder scored 32 points in FC's win over Castle on Friday. Floyd Central added a win against Clarksville on Saturday, while New Albany has yet to be tested following blowouts of Clarksville, Bloomington South, and Evansville Harrison. New Albany will be without sophomore wing Jackson Streander, who tore his ACL recently.
3A No. 3 Hammond at No. 3 Gary West Side 8:00 pm
Hammond nearly pulled off the upset over 4A #1 Lawrence North on Saturday, falling by a single point. Reggie Abran dropped 18 on six three-pointers, and Sean Burress added 16. They'll need more from Harold Woods and Darrell Reed if they'll want to take down another one of 4A's top teams, Gary West Side. The Cougar has the size to match up with anyone in the state behind 6'7 power forward Jalen Washington and 6'8 center Mason Nicholson, but it was the play of guard Quimari Peterson and wing Chrishawn Christmas who led them to a win over Michigan City last weekend. Peterson led the team with 23 points and Christmas had the game-winning bucket with 12 seconds to go.
No. 5 Cathedral at No. 9 Warren Central 7:30 pm
These sectional foes could get a preview of March this Friday when the Irish and Warriors take the court. Cathedral is led by senior Air Force commitment Vincent Brady and junior point guard Tayshawn Comer. The Irish are coming off a double-overtime loss to Homestead on Saturday night. Warren Central has won the last four matchups in this series and looks to continue that trend behind senior guard Malik Stanley. Stanley had 23 in a recent loss to Attucks. He and senior transfer Donald Coats look to rebound, and they'll need a good performance from recent Louisville pledge Tae Davis, who was held to just nine points in the Attucks contest.
3A No. 1 Silver Creek at North Harrison 7:30 pm
These two teams will be found towards the top of the 3A rankings all year long thanks to their star-studded frontcourts. North Harrison features 6'10 William and Mary signee LT Hatton, who can score at the rim or stretch defenses to well behind the three-point line. Junior Ethan Oakley returns after missing nearly all of last season with an injury. Sophomore guard Kaleb Kellems looks to breakout this season. Silver Creek is 3-0 and all in runaway fashion, and they've been playing without star forward and Mr. Basketball candidate Trey Kaufman-Renn due to an ankle injury. No worries for the Dragons, however, and point guard Branden Northern and Toledo-bound forward Kooper Jacobi are more than able to pick up the slack. Jacobi's first two games this year were 44 points / 18 rebounds and 32 points / 13 rebounds.
Southridge vs. 1A No. 1 Barr-Reeve 7:30 pm (Southern Indiana)
Another great southern Indiana showdown as Colson Montgomery and his Southridge Raiders look to bounce back from a season-opening loss to Evansville Mater Dei. Montgomery is a 6'4 wing who is headed to IU to play baseball but is a standout on the hardwood as well. Barr-Reeve has future Bellarmine Knight Curt Hopf leads the way inside for the top-ranked Vikings. Hagen Knepp and Brycen Graber make up potent weapons on the perimeter.
Saturday, December 12
2A No. 4 Central Noble at Westview 7:30 pm
A strong match-up as Westview and fourth-ranked Central Noble meet in an early-season 2A showdown that could figure heavily into the NECC title race. Drew Litwiler and Mason Yoder lead the way for Westview, who is looking to make up for the loss of all-time leading scorer Charlie Yoder to graduation. Central Noble has one of the best junior guards in the state in 6'3 sniper Connor Essegian. The junior is currently averaging 29 points per game and his team is 2-0 after wins over Canterbury and Angola. Senior forward Sawyer Yoder is also a threat as one of the best playmakers in northern Indiana small school hoops.
3A No. 6 Bosse vs 3A No. 9 Heritage Hills 7:30 pm (Southern Indiana)
Heritage Hills lost all-time leading scorer Murry Becher and veteran point guard Simon Scherry to graduation last year, but it looks like the Patriots haven't missed a beat. They dominated North Harrison earlier in the season, and future Evansville Purple Ace Blake Sisley is why. The 6'8 Sisley can hurt defense from anywhere on the court, and his versatility is hard to stop. Logan Kryzkowski and Jake Johnson also average double figures for this veteran team, whose top four scoring slots are all held by seniors. Bosse is led by junior guard Julian Norris, who scored 25 in a win over Bishop Chatard last weekend. The 6'3 junior was recently offered by Southern Indiana.
