The IHSAA boys basketball sectional pairings were announced on Sunday. Here is a quick breakdown of the first/second round match-ups of the favorites in each class.
4A
Arsenal Tech (19-2)- Everyone in sectional 10 is over .500. So, there is no great draw available to anyone. Tech will play Lawrence North in the first round then Lawrence Central if they beat LN. It won't be smooth sailing, but Tech should advance.
Carmel (17-1)-Difficult draw for the two-time defending 4A champions. They are used to playing extremely tough games in the sectional; this won't scare them.
Hamilton Southeastern (18-3)- HSE received a "good" draw for sectional 8. There really is no such thing as an easy draw in that sectional though. They are on the opposite side of Carmel, Zionsville and North Central.
Penn (17-1)- Difficult draw for Penn. They face South Bend Adams (13-6) in the first round then potentially would play South Bend Washington (13-4) in the second round. Penn will be tested in order to get out of the sectional.
Fort Wayne North Side (20-1)-Not an easy draw for North. They play a good Snider team in the first round while Carroll (Fort Wayne) received the bye. They would potentially play Carroll in the championship game.
3A
Greensburg (20-1)- Greensburg and rival Batesville are on opposite sides of the bracket. Batesville is the only threat to Greensburg's sectional hopes.
Guerin Catholic (17-3)- Sectional 26 is loaded, but Guerin did get a good draw. They received a first round bye then will face Brebeuf or Chatard in the championship game.
Bowman Academy (15-3)- Bowman plays Lighthouse CPA in the first round then either Hammond or Griffith in the second round. The second round could challenge Bowman, but they are the heavy favorite in the sectional.
Corydon Central (17-2)- Sectional 30 is likely the toughest 3A sectional from top to bottom. Corydon will play North Harrison (7-11) in the first round then the winner of Silver Creek (12-5)/Madison (13-4). Brownstown Central (15-3) has the much easier draw.
NorthWood (17-1)- NorthWood plays Lakeland in the first round then plays the winner of Wawasee and Tippecaneo Valley in the second round. Average draw for NorthWood, they are the heavy favorite.
New Haven (16-3)- Received a bye then will play the winner of Garrett/Concordia in the second round. New Haven should survive this sectional.
2A
Park Tudor (17-4)- PT received the bye. That means one less game for Trevon Bluiett to move up the season and career scoring lists in Indiana high school basketball history. Park Tudor should win the sectional, but Indianapolis Howe and Scecina have a chance to pull an upset.
Clarksville (16-2)- Drew Crawford County (16-3) in the first round. That could very well determine the sectional champion.
Bishop Noll (16-3)- Noll drew a solid Lake Station (14-5) for their first round match-up. That could be a difficult game for Noll even though Noll beat Lake Station by 16 in their first game.
Wapahani (19-1) and Frankton (17-2)- Two of the top 2A teams are in the same sectional. Wapahani received the bye. These two teams would not meet until the sectional championship game.
Cloverdale (18-1)- Cloverdale drew Speedway (12-6) in the first round. Cloverdale's high-scoring freshman Cooper Neese will be challenged by Speedway's Jordan Furlow and Anthony Jones. That should be a good game.
1A
Barr-Reeve (18-1)- Barr-Reeve is the only team in the sectional that is above .500. This should be a cakewalk for Barr-Reeve.
Covington (16-1)- Lafayette Central Catholic always wins their sectional. That is not an exaggeration either; LCC has won 12 straight sectionals. Covington will be challenged by LCC in the first round.
Elkhart Christian (15-4)- Blackhawk Christian is the main competition for Elkhart Christian. They should match-up in the second round as long as both take care of their first round business. Lakewood Park is a darkhorse since they have an easier draw.
Kouts (13-4) and Marquette Catholic (13-6)- Five of the six teams in the sectional are above .500. Marquette received a good draw with the bye then will likely play Washington Township in the second round while Kouts, Morgan Township, 21st Century Charter, and Westville are on the opposite side of the bracket.
