Jeff Schoenle and I take a look at the 1A regionals in the 2014 IHSAA boys basketball tournament.
Site: Triton
Teams: Culver, North White, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Michigan City Marquette
Top 5 college prospects: Trent Elliott (Fairmont State), Ryan Fazekas (Providence), Joey Morlan, Richie Mitchell, Wes Davidson
Trevor Andershock's pick: Marquette Catholic
Jeff Schoenle's pick: Blackhawk Christian
North White won a sectional comprised of fellow Midwest Conference foes, and are led by sophomore forward Connor Cain and senior guard Drake Fleck. Culver counters with 6'4” senior wing Trent Elliot, who is committed to Fairmount State. Culver should be able to handle North White. Marquette has 6'7” Providence commit Ryan Fazekas, who is capable of winning a game by himself. Blackhawk Christian has an outstanding junior class comprised of 6'5” wing Joey Morlan, 6'4” wing Wes Davidson, and 5'11” point guard Riley Reimschiesel. Andershock and Schoenle disagree with the semifinal winner between Blackhawk and Marquette. Schoenle has Blackhawk taking this in a close one while Andershock is taking Marquette Catholic. In Schoenle's title bout between Culver and Blackhawk Christian, Schoenle gives the edge to the school who has been tested, and that would be Blackhawk, who played eight games against 4A competition this season. Andershock is taking Marquette to beat Culver in the regional final. Marquette will need Richie Mitchell, JoVonte Peals, Nate Flores and Braxton Miller to play well in order to make the 1A final four.
Site: Frankfort
Teams: Seton Catholic, Liberty Christian, Rossville, Lafayette Central Catholic
Top 5 college prospects: Chris Nunn, Desmond Bane, Brandon Tonsoni, Jackson Anthrop, E.T. Brenneman
Trevor Andershock's pick: Liberty Christian
Jeff Schoenle's pick: Lafayette Central Catholic
Seton Catholic and Liberty Christian match up in the first semi, and it should be a showdown of talented guards. Seton Catholic sophomore Desmond Bane leads the Cardinals in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. Liberty Christian junior Chris Nunn is the main weapon for them, but he has help in the form of sophomore brother Franklin Nunn. The brothers should be enough to hold down Bane and move on. Longtime rivals Rossville and Central Catholic square off for the second time this season, as Central Catholic won the first meeting 82-68. While Brandon Tonsoni and E.T. Brenneman are a fantastic duo, sophomore Jackson Anthrop and senior Pete Metzinger and Mitch Witteven form a solid backcourt for Central Catholic. Central Catholic should win the second matchup as well. Liberty Christian and Central Catholic have met in the last two regionals, with the teams splitting those meetings. Schoenle is taking Central Catholic in the rubber match since he did not take them in the section. LCC's closest game against a 1A opponent was an 11 point victory over #4 Covington in the sectional. Andershock is taking Liberty Christian as the regional champion.
Site: Martinsville
Teams: Greenwood Christian, Metropolitan, Clay City, Oldenburg
Top college prospects: Lucas Peters, Morgan Booher, Matt Moorman
Trevor Andershock's pick: Greenwood Christian
Jeff Schoenle's pick: Clay City
Greenwood Christian plays Cinderella sectional winner Metropolitan in the first semifinal. Clay City will have to keep Oldenburg's sophomore point guard Matt Moorman in check, but the Southwest Indiana Conference champs are peaking at the right time, winning 11 of their last 12. We are both taking Clay City in that contest. Clay City will have to slow down high scoring wing Lucas Peters and senior guard Morgan Booher to get to the school's first semistate in 40 years. Schoenle thinks the disappointment of losing the past two years at regionals will fuel this group, and Clay City will knock off Greenwood Christian. Andershock is taking Greenwood Christian to win the Martinsville regional.
Site: Loogootee
Teams: Barr-Reeve, Trinity Lutheran, Lanesville, Northeast DuBois
Top college prospects:Addison Wagler, Micah Bullock, Jack Ferree, Joe Ferree
Trevor Andershock's pick: Barr-Reeve
Jeff Schoenle's pick: Barr-Reeve
Trinity Lutheran is only in their ninth year of IHSAA tournament play, but picked up their second sectional title this season. Too bad they'll run into one of the best defensive teams in the state. Bryan Hughes only has one senior starter on his Viking squad, but he has built one of the best programs in the state and has everyone bought in. Barr-Reeve should cruise in this semifinal. Lanesville takes on the Jeeps of Northeast DuBois in the second game. Lanesville won their earlier meeting this year by 18, and should win this one easily too. Barr-Reeve will have their hands full with the Ferree brothers, senior Jack and sophomore Joe, but wing Micah Bullock and forward Addison Wagler along with their airtight defense should be enough to get them on to semistate.
