Merrillville traveled to Chesterton on Saturday night for both teams first DAC contest of the year. Merrillville got out to a quick lead but the young Chesterton team fought back to take a 22-21 half time advantage. It was all Merrillville in the 3rd quarter though, outscoring the Trojans 24-12. The Trojans cut the deficit in the 4th quarter but Merrillville was able to hold on for a 54-47 victory.
Senior Edward Seay and junior B.J. Jenkins led Merrillville with 12 points apiece. Seay was 6 of 8 from the field and pulled down 6 rebounds. Most of his points came on mid-range jumpers. He had a couple of nice tip-ins as well off of missed shots. None of Seay’s points were off of back to the basket post moves.
B.J. Jenkins, 5’10” guard, was 2 for 5 beyond the arc. Jenkins was coming off of an impressive 8 for 10 (3-point shooting), 31 point performance the night before against Highland.
Matt Holba, 6’6” freshman, played 26 minutes scored 9 points and pulled down 7 rebounds for Chesterton in only his second varsity game. All of his points came in the paint. He looked strong on his moves to the basket. Senior Kemonte Price led Chesterton with 15 points though while sophomore Cole Teal added 10 points.
