Trevon Bluiett happened. With the Marion County Tournament final tied at 32 and Warren Central with momentum after sophomore Djimon Henson's 3-pointer at the buzzer, Trevon Bluiett scored 14 of Park Tudor's 16 third quarter points and gave the visiting Panthers enough breathing room to pull away and win their second consective Marion County Tournament championship. Bluiett finished with 40 points on 12-23 shooting and 12-14 from the stripe.
Warren Central opened the game by establishing 6'5" senior Jaraan Lands in the post, and was able to take a 17-15 lead after one quarter thanks to a buzzer-beating three by Djimon Henson. Lands was able to repeatedly get excellent position against Park Tudor in the first half, and the Warrior guards fed him over and over. Austin Shelton helped keep Park Tudor even, as he scored all 10 of his points in the first half.
The third quarter was a different story, as Bluiett came out of the locker room aggressive, scoring from all over the court, including a pair of threes with Djimon Henson draped on him. "Trevon just refuses to lose. He'll do whatever it takes to win. He's so efficient, and he perfects his craft and works so hard at what he does." said Park Tudor coach Kyle Cox.
Park Tudor was also able to slow down Jaraan Lands in the second half, as he scored just 4 of his team-high 16 after halftime. "That's the asset of Roy Hairston, who played at Purdue for Gene Keady. He was in there talking with Dwayne Gibson about positioning and getting it figured out with him. We dug down with our guards, and Dwayne did a great job." Cox added. Jordan Garnett was solid throughout the game for the Warriors, but in the fourth quarter, Park Tudor iced the game from the free throw line courtesy of Alex Mack and Trevon Bluiett.
While Bluiett scored 42 and 40 in the final two games of the tournament, it was far from a one man show this week. Austin Shelton scored 17 in a quarterfinal win over Lawrence North, Alex Mack added 25 in the semifinals against North Central, and juniors Dwayne Gibson and Evan Frank did a good job on the Warren Central frontcourt duo of Jaraan Lands and Jordan Garnett in the title match. Bluiett added "I trust those guys a lot. It shows in practice, and I have no worries about them being able to make the plays we need them to make. We've shown this week we can play fast or slow, and still win. It gives us a lot of confidence heading into the rest of the season to know that we can win games either way."
Park Tudor moves their record to 11-1, while Warren Central stands at 9-5.
