4A Regional Previews

There are many great games slated for Saturday at 4A regionals around Indiana. Jeff Schoenle and I take a look at each site.

Site: Michigan City

Teams: Lake Central, LaPorte, Concord, Penn

Top 5 college prospects: Tyler Wideman (Butler), Filip Serwatka, Jordan Geist, Gage Ott (Bethel), Tye Wilburn

Trevor Andershock's pick: Lake Central

Jeff Schoenle's pick: Penn

Lake Central with Butler signee Tyler Wideman and guard Tye Wilburn face fellow Duneland Conference member LaPorte in one semifinal. The two teams played on January 10th with Lake Central winning 65-46. LaPorte doesn't believe they are 19 points worse than Lake Central. The Penn vs. Concord semifinal is a rematch of a December 13 game that saw Penn take home a 66-48 victory. While the game may be closer, we expect the Kingsmen to win this time as well. The title match will pit Lake Central's inside-outside duo versus Penn's spectacular guard play of Jordan Giest, Nate Miller and Billy Doslak. Wideman will be a load to deal with inside, but Penn is on a mission, avenging their only loss of the season against South Bend Washington in the sectional. Schoenle is picking he Kingsmen to move onto the semistate while Andershock is taking Lake Central to sneak by Penn.

Site: Marion

Teams: Kokomo, Homestead, FW North Side, Hamilton Southeastern

Top 5 college prospects: Caleb Swanigan, Tayler Persons (Northern Kentucky), Tyler Jenkins (Lehigh), Eric Davidson, Trevion Crews

Trevor Andershock's pick: Fort Wayne North Side

Jeff Schoenle's pick: Hamilton Southeastern

Kokomo and Homestead should be a great matchup in one semifinal, as the Wildkats will have to figure out how to slow down sophomore sensation Caleb Swanigan inside while also containing 6-7 Dana Batt. Tayler Persons will have to have a great game for Kokomo, and I think he's up for the challenge. Kokomo will need Erik Bowen to play well on both ends of the floor. The other semifinal will be a contrast in styles, as the patient offense of Hamilton Southeastern takes on the pressure defense and up tempo offense of FW North Side. Schoenle predicts that the backcourt duo of Davidson and Jenkins get Hamilton Southeastern by North Side. Andershock is looking for North Side to pull the upside with their size and balance. Seniors Trevion Crews and Mike Davis have had stellar final high school seasons for North Side. We both believe that the winner of the Hamilton Southeastern-North Side game will capture the regional title.

Site: Southport

Teams: Arsenal Tech, Richmond, Pike, Brownsburg

Top 5 college prospects: Trey Lyles (Kentucky), Jeremie Tyler (Ball State), K.J. Walton, Justin Roberts, CJ Walker

Trevor Andershock's pick: Arsenal Tech

Jeff Schoenle's pick: Arsenal Tech

Richmond has had a great season, but they have not faced anything like Tech. Ball State signee Jeremie Tyler is having a great postseason so far, and Justin Parker and Mike Jones make teams pay for focusing on Tyler and Trey Lyles. Richmond will need to get huge performances from senior Michael Tillman and junior Joel Okafor in order to pull the upset. Pike and Brownsburg played on December 14, with Brownsburg emerging victorious. Their three headed backcourt monster of Trevor Lucas, Darrian Ringo, and KJ Walton is too much for the young guards of Pike to handle. 2016 guard Justin Thomas has done a very good job of leading Pike this season. Pike has great length with Kendall Rollins, Jalen Morgan and Tahjai Teague. Tech and Brownsburg have comparable backcourts, but Kentucky signee Trey Lyles and unsigned senior Justin Parker have the clear advantage in the frontcourt. Lyles has been a monster on the defensive end so far this tournament, blocking shots and cleaning up the glass. Tech is on a mission to get to state, and they will take one step closer to that goal.

Site: Seymour

Teams: Evansville Central, New Albany, Franklin Central, Bloomington North

Top 5 college prospects: Grant Sims (Illinois-Chicago), Saikou Jallow (Maryville), Kourtlandt Martin (Rend Lake College), Lucas Huffman, Tyler Truesdel

Trevor Andershock's pick: Bloomington North

Jeff Schoenle's pick: Bloomington North

This regional is really up for grabs. Evansville Central and New Albany just played a couple weeks ago, with Central winning 47-44. This time around Jim Shannon's squad will be motivated for revenge. Bloomington North and Franklin Central played on the last day of January, with North winning by 13. Saikou Jallow and UIC signee Grant Sims are too much for Lucas Huffman and crew this time as well as North moves on. New Albany and Bloomington North played on the last weekend of the regular season, and it was a rout for Bloomington North. Expect a closer game, but still expect a Bloomington North win.
