2A Bowman Academy vs. Park Tudor

This is the match-up that everyone has been anticipating since Bowman Academy moved up to 2A starting this season. Bowman was expected to roll to a state championship last season, but those plans were ruined by Morgan Township in a sectional upset. They entered the tournament just 12-8 this year, but that is extremely deceiving. They play a monster schedule of the top teams in Chicago and the Indianapolis area. Tipton was the first team to challenge Bowman so far in tournament play.

There are a lot of Division 1 programs that would have liked to have Bowman’s frontline of DeJuan Marrero, Stephan Hawkins, and Elijah Ray. All three are heading to Division 1 programs next season and Marrero is a lock for the Indiana All-Star team. Marrero does most of his damage on the offensive glass. If Park Tudor is going to win, they will have to get a body on Marrero which won’t be easy out of Park Tudor’s 2-3 zone that they always play.

Park Tudor is having a great season, entering the state championship game with a record of 24-2 (I was at their loss to Pike, who is also having a good tournament run). This is Park Tudor’s third straight championship game appearance.  They lost to Wheeler in 2010 and beat Bishop Noll last season.

Park Tudor is led by Mr. Basketball frontrunner Yogi Ferrell. Ferrell was a one-man show when he led Park Tudor to the championship game as a sophomore. That isn’t the case anymore with sophomore Troy Spears verbally committed to New Mexico, Trevon Bluiett having a sensational sophomore campaign, and role players that can shoot from the outside like Paul Bayt (Manhattan signee) and J.B. Rapp.

I expect this game to be close throughout. It will likely come down to if Park Tudor can knock down open 3’s when Ferrell draws two or three defenders and if Park Tudor can limit Bowman to one shot a possession.  Bowman doesn’t have any consistent outside shooters, but if they get 2 or 3 shots a possession it won’t matter how poorly they shoot.

1A Loogootee vs. Rockville

Loogootee is a traditional power from the small-school ranks. They were state runners-up in 2005. Their 1975 team in the single class-era was almost “Hoosiers II” as they fell to Marion in the state championship game. This year they are led by 6-2 guard Bryant Ackerman and 6-6 center Conner Wittmer. Ackerman averages over 20 points per game and does a bit of everything.

Rockville has now had 20 wins in a season four of the last five years. Last season, they lost in the semi-state to Triton. This year they are led by juniors Lane Mahurin, Gary Ulrich, and Jordan McFall. Mahurin has an offer from Indiana State, where his brother is currently a sophomore on the team.

Expect this game to be in the upper 40’s or low 50’s as neither team looks to put up a ton of points. Both defenses only give up 43.9 points per game.

Most Improved Player: 2012 Season

Trevor Thompson is a 6'10" center from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. One thing he could always do well, even though he did not play much as a junior, was run the court. Now, he has built his offensive skills around his agility. His post game has improved 10 fold over the last year. A lof the credit for his development goes to Ben Davis head coach Mark James and his staff along with his AAU coach Ramon Stallings. That development made Thompson our most improved player this season.

Thompson plans to attend IMG Academy in Florida for prep school next year. The extra year will help his game improve even more plus give him more recruiting exposure since he developed late. This spring/summer he will be playing AAU with the Eric Gordon All-Stars. That team includes notables like V.J. Beachem, Devin Davis, Zak Irvin, and Zavier Turner.

Most Improved Player: Last Two Years

R.J. Hunter and Glenn Robinson, III tie for the honor of most improved player over the last two years. Both had their games explode over the last couple seasons. Hunter (6'6" shooting guard from Pike) went from a skinny kid who was just a catch and shoot, shooter to a well-rounded great player. Although he still gets beat off the dribble more than he should, he creates havoc on the defensive end by using his long arms and anticipation to get into passing lanes. Hunter's penetration game has really improved as well. If you guard him too tightly or close-out too hard, he gets to the bucket and makes good things happen by either scoring or dishing to an open teammate. His father, Ron Hunter, got a steal from the high-majors when his son committed to Georgia State.

Robinson was a 6-4 small forward with a solid mid-range game, but not too much else two seasons ago. He grew two inches and that helped his explosiveness as well. Robinson used to be a below the rim finisher, but now he will go over the rim and defenders to finish. His shooting range is still expanding, but he is becoming a consistent three-point shooter. His potential in college (Michigan) and beyond is extremely high.

Overall and positional rankings for the class of 2012 have been updated. This is one of the strongest and deepest classes in the history of Indiana high school basketball. There are currently 38 Division 1 committed players with a few more likely to commit this spring.

The biggest changes in the rankings include the listing of the foreign move-ins from Marquette, La Lumiere, and Traders Point. Those players include Matej Buovac, Mislav Brzoja, Alex Olah, Leke Solanke. There was also some rearranging in the top 10 for the first time in awhile, but Gary Harris remains in the top spot.

I accidently omitted Jason Ray of Martinsville and Dean Danos of Bishop Noll from the rankings. Here is a look at the top 10...

Rank Name HT Pos School College
1 Gary Harris 6'4 SG Hamilton Southeastern Michigan St.
2 Yogi Ferrell 5'11 PG Park Tudor Indiana
3 Glenn Robinson,III 6'6 SF Lake Central Michigan
4 Jeremy Hollowell 6'7 SF Lawrence Central Indiana
5 Kellen Dunham 6'6 SG Pendleton Heights Butler
6 Hanner Perea 6'8 PF LaLumiere Indiana
7 Rapheal Davis 6'5 SG LaLumiere Purdue
8 Ron Patterson 6'3 SG Broad Ripple Indiana
9 Ronnie Johnson 5'10 PG North Central Purdue
