Sunday was the start of the Metro Indy Basketball Fall League at the Noblesville Boys and Girls Club. There are over 300 players in the league including 40 Division 1 prospects. The effort level has been very high in the past years and this week was no different. We were not able to see every game Sunday, but here are some of the top performances that we witnessed.
Jaylon Brown, 6’0” PG 2013 Fishers HS/Martin’s Wolverines, is the easy choice to lead this list since he scored 50 points in a game Sunday night. He had 7 three-pointers in the 50 point game and another 6 threes in his other game. If he shoots it consistently from the outside, his opponents are in trouble since he is explosive off the dribble.
Devin Davis, 6’6” F 2013 Warren Central HS/Eric Gordon All-Stars, is another no-brainer and likely could be on the list every week. The Indiana University-bound forward dominates the game on both ends during fall league. There are a lot of talented players in the league, but none play harder than Davis. He had somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 points and 30 rebounds over the two games Sunday night. IU fans will love his toughness and energy.
Aaron Siler, 5’10” PG 2013 Robinson HS (IL), was an unknown for me heading into the night, but he quickly changed that with his shooting ability. His shot is extremely consistent. When he missed, it was not by much and it was always on-line. Siler was most impressive with his ability to hit shots off the dribble. He is a player that we will keep a close eye on as the league moves forward.
Alex Etherington, 6’6” SF 2013 Hamilton Heights HS/Indiana Elite-South, was involved in one of the best match-ups of the first night against Warren Central’s Jordan Garnett. Garnett did a great job defending Etherington, but Alex just made some tough shots including many long threes over the top of Garnett. Etherington also swatted a lay-up attempt off the backboard so hard that it started a fast break by ricocheting to half-court. I firmly believe Etherington will do well at Kansas State by his upperclassmen years.
Elliott Welmer, 6’7” SF 2014 Columbus North HS/Grassroots Indiana-Hasley, had a very good summer and continued his strong play Sunday night. The 6-7, Welmer is a perimeter player with a smooth outside shot. The question mark for me has been, “Can he guard on the perimeter?” Sunday night, he guarded some athletes on the perimeter and did a good job against them. He also was able to get to the rim off the dribble when defenses were out of position. He has the talent, but he will need to put on muscle before he can reach his potential.
Ryan Welage, 6’7” F 2015 Greensburg HS/Eric Gordon Central Stars, shot the ball extremely well from the outside. His range is extending passed the 3-point line with ease now and he shot it very well in the game that I watched. He did struggle to defend and battle Devin Davis, but that would be expected since he probably gives up 30 pounds to Davis.
Zak Irvin, 6’6” SG 2013 Hamilton Southeastern/Eric Gordon All-Stars, is another guy that does not have anything to play for in the league except pride and he puts out a great effort each game. The Michigan-bound, wing scored at-will as his team won both of their games Sunday night. He disrupted things on the defensive end and forced numerous turnovers.
